]]>Let's face it, custom closet systems may seem like a luxury, but they're a necessity for anyone who wants to keep their clothing and personal belongings in tip-top shape. A messy closet can lead to clutter and stress, which are two things no one needs more of in their life. While most people think they know the basics of closet organization, there are a few little-known hacks that can make a big impact.
Here are some handy secrets to help you maximize your closet space and keep everything organized and tidy:
Read on to discover the best little-known organization secrets that can transform your closet space.
One of the most overlooked areas in a closet is the door. By using the back of your closet door, you can add a shoe organizer or some hooks to maximize your storage space. This is especially useful for small closets where every inch counts. You can use the shoe organizer to store shoes, or even smaller items like hats, gloves, and scarves. Hooks can be used for purses, belts, or other miscellaneous items.
Ironing boards can take up a lot of space, and let's be honest, they're not the most attractive item in a closet. A shelf-mounted or side-mounted ironing board is a great alternative to a traditional ironing board. These boards can be easily mounted to the side or underside of a shelf, and they fold down when not in use, freeing up valuable closet space.
Are you still folding your clothes as you put them away? There are other options, and while some of those involve complicated and possibly intimidating folding techniques, at least one is fairly simple. According to House Beautiful , you should roll your clothes instead of folding them. Not only does this save space, but it also makes it easier to find the item you need without having to dig through a pile of clothing.
If you’re making the most of your custom closet storage space, you’re likely storing some items up high and out of reach. Keeping a stepladder handy can help you quickly and easily store sweaters, boxes, or blankets away, rather than leaving them in a heap on the floor. Put a small step ladder in a corner of the closet or on a hook on the wall so you can easily reach the highest shelves without straining your arms or neck.
Folded pants take up some valuable real estate in your custom closet system—and the process of folding is time-consuming, too. A pant rack is a great alternative that allows you to hang your pants vertically, maximizing closet space and making it easy to find the pair you need. Plus, your pants stay wrinkle-free and tidy.
Dividers are an often-overlooked addition to shelves and drawers that can make a world of difference in how much storage space you’re able to use effectively. By using dividers, you’re able to keep each individual stack in its own space, eliminating the problem of disturbing one stack as you reach for something in another. Not only does this keep things neater, but it also limits how much your items are able to move around, keeping them safe and secure.
Waterfall hooks are handy hooks that attach to the top of your closet rod and cascade down, creating multiple levels of hanging space for your clothes and accessories. Not only do they maximize your storage space, but they also make it easier to see and access all of your items—and they couldn’t be easier to install. As a bonus, waterfall hooks are also a great solution for organizing those hard-to-store items like scarves, belts, and purses.
A custom closet system is a great investment, especially if you take the time to maximize the space and keep everything organized. By following the secret tips above, you can make the most of your closet space. With a little effort and creativity, you can turn your closet into a beautiful and functional space that makes your life easier and less stressful.
Banana muffins are such an easy breakfast item to use up ripe bananas, even if you don’t consider yourself a baker.
Be sure not to overmix your muffin batter, and your muffins will come out great every time. It’s so easy, you can even get your kids to help you. Or better yet, they make it themselves depending on their age.
This recipe is sponsored by Organics Unlimited.
We made these muffins with almond milk to keep them dairy free. With bananas and maple syrup, you don’t need any extra sugar. (Although, we did top them with a little sprinkle of coarse turbinado sugar).
It’s almost impossible to mess these up, and you only need one bowl. What’s stopping you from giving them a try?
Let’s get to it!
Banana muffins and banana bread are very similar. But have you ever gotten a slice of banana bread in the Starbucks drive-thru and tried to eat it in your car on the way to work? It’s messy, to say the least. Crumbs everywhere.
Banana muffins have all of the classic banana bread flavors like sweet organic bananas, vanilla extract, and that classic spicy cinnamon. Muffins are easier for little hands to eat on the go and quick for you to grab as a snack or throw on a plate for breakfast in the morning. We’ve added and swapped a few ingredients to make your life a little easier and make you feel like the superhero parent that you are.
And it doesn’t hurt that your kids will love them too.
If you love traditional banana bread, you’ll love this dairy-free, organic banana muffin recipe.
Here’s why:
This recipe is so quick and simple that your kids could make it themselves (and maybe they will one day). With all of the whole grains, maple syrup, bananas, and oats, your kids will be just as in love with this muffin recipe as you are.
We guarantee it!
You probably have most of the ingredients for banana muffins in your kitchen already. Below is the full list of ingredients so you can double-check that you have everything you need.
All of these ingredients can easily be found at most grocery stores. They’re affordable and accessible, so everyone can make them at home, even you. If you’re a beginner baker, this is a great recipe to start with because it’s pretty hard to mess up banana muffins.
They’ll turn out great.
The debate has been alive and well between organic and non-organic produce. The short answer for us is that all produce is good for you. We believe in organic bananas because we believe in Organics Unlimited.

Did you know that there are so many other ways you can use bananas? We have a Banana Hair Mask that helps boost the health of your hair and scalp. Banana peels are also great for polishing shoes. Potassium and other natural oils found in bananas make for a powerful, natural shoe polish. Rubbing a banana peel on dusty, scuffed-up boots and shoes will have them looking new again in no time.
And, bananas are a great way to make homemade ice cream (also known as nice cream when you use bananas). Everyone will love our Strawberry Banana Ice Cream or Banana Nice Cream Sundae recipes. Plus, even your pup can enjoy the taste and nutrition of bananas. Make them a special treat that will make their tails wag, Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes.
Step 1
Grease your muffin tin.
Whisk coconut oil and maple syrup in a large bowl.
Add eggs and continue to whisk.
Step 2
Slowly add mashed bananas and mix until combined. Add almond milk, vanilla, salt, and cinnamon and whisk again.
Step 3
Add flour and oats and mix with a large spoon.
Evenly divide your batter into your muffin tin and top with oats and sugar.
Step 4
Bake for 22-25 minutes at 325℉. Let cool and serve warm.
Bananas are the not-so-secret weapon when it comes to our take on banana muffins. Bananas are naturally sweet, so you can automatically cut back on the sweetener you add to the batter. Along with adding extra vitamins and minerals, bananas naturally replace some of the fat like butter or oil typically used to thicken the batter.
Be careful not to use more bananas than the recipe calls for because your muffins may become heavy and look uncooked in the center.
Banana muffins will keep at room temperature for up to two days. Store them in a plastic bag or an airtight container in a single layer lined with a paper towel. The paper towel soaks up the moisture so your muffins don’t become soggy. Room temperature storage keeps your muffins fresh.
If you really want, you can store banana muffins in the fridge for up to four days. Just make a note that storing any muffins in the fridge can change the texture and taste. They don’t stay as soft and fluffy, and the sweet banana flavor may not be as strong.
Again, we don’t want to end up with soggy muffins from the frozen crystals that form in the freezer. Wrap each individual muffin with aluminum foil and place them in a freezer bag, in a single layer. This makes it easy to take out the exact amount of muffins you need when you’re ready to eat them and helps keep them tasting fresh by preventing freezer burn. When stored properly, banana muffins keep in the freezer for up to three months.
To thaw your muffins, unwrap them and let them thaw on your counter. If you’re like us, we love our muffins warm, like they just came out of the oven. You can pop your muffins in the microwave for 30-45 seconds or reheat them in the oven at 400℉ for 10-15 minutes.
This is a company that believes in sustainability. Organics Unlimited works toward a better future in the way they organically grow their bananas to the way they treat their community and employees. They efficiently use and manage water, use the whole banana plant from stalk to stem with composting programs at their farm, and use organic fertilizers. But that’s not all.
Organics Unlimited is deeply committed to its surrounding communities in Mexico. Their Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers (GROW) program has provided over three million dollars in services to those who need it most. They’ve helped their community get access to higher education, dental and vision care, clean drinking water, and even small business loans, no matter their employment status.
Organics Unlimited cares about the quality of the produce they grow, and they work hard to help those around them.

]]>Vacations in the summer months usually involve traveling to warmer destinations where we can just let go and relax. But preparing for any travel can be anything but relaxing.
So here are some fundamental things to consider that can make the whole process less stressful, and actually kind of enjoyable! Once your itinerary is set and you have a fairly good idea of what the weather conditions will be, you’re already half-way there. The events and climate will give you the parameters for what and how much you need to pack.
What causes a lot of anxiety in traveling is those last-minute decisions that often result in making mistakes… resulting in heavy and bulky luggage! So, here’s my main, and what I consider the most helpful, suggestion: start creating your travel wardrobe two weeks before you leave.
If you have one of those handy dandy rolling clothes racks, use it to display the entire wardrobe you plan to pack. If you don’t have one of those racks, designate a portion of your closet to what you plan to bring. You can add or subtract items to the collection during that time, but at least begin the process two weeks in advance.
The reason for this is that your brain starts to connect what you see on that rack every day with how you see yourself at your destination. The length of your trip and the circumstances you will be in will determine what goes on that rack. During that two-week period anything that just doesn’t make sense for your purposes or that doesn’t contribute to the whole image you want to convey will stand out to be eliminated.
It’s not as important to create entire outfits as it is to be sure that the colors you choose coordinate well with each other. That doesn’t mean you have to go for all neutrals, although neutral basics will make your packing easier and your travel less stressful. For variety you can bring along one or two print items. There should just be a feeling of harmony when you look at all the items on the rack.
What this means is that several items will be in the same color and will harmonize with your neutrals. Neutral colored bottoms and accessories – unless you want to add a pop of color in something like espadrilles, a belt, or a small bag, will make creating a whole look easier. A few tops in your favorite colors will make sure you won’t be bored. But frankly, mono color neutral wardrobes are extremely chic and packable.
If you love prints, a striped top or blouse is perfect for a summer day and can work with both blouses and slacks. And a floral printed blouse or a midi dress in a nice print can be dressed up for dinner or down for an afternoon walk through town.
Another possibility is to pack a pair of loose, printed slacks and wear them with a very simple solid color button down blouse. A simple white cotton or linen one would be terrific in this look. Add some gold jewelry and you’re good to go. It’s a very chic and festive look.
Whether you bring both pants and/or skirts, make sure that the tops you choose can be worn with either type of garment, several times, and in multiple ways.
For most of us, the biggest packing conundrum is about which shoes to bring. One woman I know took exactly one pair of shoes with her for a three-week trip to Italy. They were designed for comfort, had a 1 ½” heel, and went with everything she wore. But our feet tend to be happier when we switch to different heights and types of shoes.
So, here’s the first rule of thumb: wear your bulkiest pair for travel. Every travel expert knows this rule. Since sneakers and trainers are fashionable and acceptable everywhere right now, and are often your most comfortable shoes, that can be your bulky pair. Of course, if you are planning to do some serious hiking, heavier-soled shoes will do.
I know we all see a lot of women wearing sandals on an airplane, especially in those “celebrity airport outfit” photos. Certainly, many styles of sandals are very comfortable. (Birkenstock Arizona sandals are apparently all the rage again in Europe right now.) But frankly, sandals are less hygienic for plane or train rides, and your feet are likely to get cold.
But do plan to bring a pair of comfortable sandals. They just say “summer” more than booties or loafers. If you’re traveling for a wedding, you might think you need to bring a pair of higher-heeled sandals, but they aren’t really necessary when there are so many flat and lower-heeled elegant pretty sandals readily available. Lower heels are less awkward to pack and take up less space.
If you’re going to be going out to dine or attending social events, your sandals should be just dressy enough to look chic rather than just sturdy walking sandals. If you’re planning a poolside or beach vacation slides will serve you well.
Your third pair can be a slip-on casual shoe or canvas espadrille. The latter is dressy enough to make a lot of very simple outfits look very chic and elevated.
And whatever shoes you bring, pack them in bags. I know a lot of women use cloth bags. But shoes accumulate a lot of unpleasant detritus and organisms from the ground. I don’t think it’s a great idea to pack them in cloth bags anywhere near your clothing or toiletries. I save and re-use zip-lock type larger bags when I purchase things like sheet sets or sealed liquids. They work beautifully for packing shoes. Otherwise, large zip-lock food bags for each shoe will also work.
When planning your travel wardrobe, choose items that can be utilized for more than one event. In fact, choose items that can be worn repeatedly throughout your trip.
One multi-purpose, no-brainer garment is a large shawl in a pashmina-type fabric. It can keep you warm on a plane or train and in air conditioned rooms. It can provide a nice finishing touch for strapless or sleeveless dresses. I never travel without one.
As oversized tops are very much in vogue, a solid color oversized button down blouse can look great on its own, tucked into a skirt or slacks, or with the ends gathered up and tied around the waist. You can wear it in all those ways with a skirt, slouchy slacks, jeans, shorts or Bermudas. It can also serve as a jacket worn over a sleeveless top or tank. It can also be your beach or pool cover-up.
Fashionable French and Italian women have embraced the midi dress as a forever summer piece for ages. And the style is now popular worldwide. These are usually looser, flowing garments, which makes them very forgiving if you plan to ditch your diet while on your trip. Dress them up with silver or gold strappy sandals (sneakers won’t work with these), dangly or chunky gold earrings, and your shawl. Or dress them down by adding a button-down blouse, tied at the waist, worn with neutral slides or flats, or colored espadrilles, gold hoops, and a crossbody, or tote bag.
Printed midi dress with ruffle wrap
And especially if you’re going to a tropical climate where it might briefly rain every day, or anywhere with very changeable weather, a hoodie windbreaker or rain shell is always a good idea. These are usually thin enough to slip into your carry-on or checked luggage without creating bulk as would something like a trench coat or heavier parka.
The most comfortable material for hotter destinations is linen, of course. It breathes well and tends to keep you dry. But remember that it wrinkles right off the hanger. Style-wise a few wrinkles are perfectly acceptable in linen clothing.
If you are staying at a nicer resort, it’s likely they will have an iron and ironing board in the room. Ask ahead of time. Sometimes they will deliver an iron and ironing board to your room if it’s not already there. Otherwise, a small travel steamer is a good idea, and they can fold up into a small area for packing.
Woven rayons and other plant-based textiles are also excellent for packing. They don’t take up a lot of space, do not wrinkle, wash and rinse easily, and drape nicely. It’s a great idea to pack a couple of t-shirts or tanks in those fabrics. And as Marie Kondo of “KonMari” fame suggests, I like to roll my tees and blouses instead of folding them. I place them on top of one another and roll them as a group. They are less likely to wrinkle and seem to fit into smaller spaces in my bags.
It’s hard to travel anywhere these days without at least one pair of jeans. Denim is a heavier textile but not an uncomfortable one for travel. And it goes with just about anything. If you don’t already own a pair of white jeans, consider adding them to your collection. White is always fashionable in the summer, but now more than ever.
Wear them with a tank top in the same shade of white or one of the other colorful tops in your travel palette. You can also pair them with a striped tank or tee and add a simple belt, hoop earrings, and slides, flats or sandals for a very chic look. You can also dress them up with a patterned blouse or one of the newer eyelet style fuller sleeve blouses worn with dangling earrings.
If you pack wider leg jeans, either in blue or white, you can also likely wear them with your travel sneakers or trainers.
If the weather is going to be changeable or much cooler in the evening, a cashmere or cotton knit cardigan or pullover/jumper is another very useful addition. Wear it with your white jeans, a midi skirt, or even Bermudas with slip-ons or espadrilles.
Lifestride Kascade Wedge Espadrilles
What used to be called “fanny packs” have gone through a marketing transformation to sound more fashionable. They’re now called “waist bags” or “belt bags.” The latter actually serve as a belt, threaded through the loops on your jeans or slacks. Either type can be your everyday bag throughout the entire trip. Some are also worn as “sling” bags, worn like a cross-body.
The more utilitarian versions, like those from Baggalini, have multiple zippered compartments and are very sturdy. They’re also perfect for your travel days. The more fashionable ones are generally smaller but will likely carry your phone, passport, a few cards, and maybe also a lipstick.
Triple Zip Bagg (baggallini.com)
Another option is a so-called “anti-theft” cross-body version. These have slash-resistant construction and RFID blocking technology so your credit cards can’t be swiped electronically from someone nearby.
But if you are on a beachy-type vacation, you probably also want something bigger and more summer specific. You can certainly pack a straw, raffia, or woven satchel or tote if you stuff it with soft essentials like sleepwear, a small travel pillow, even underwear and socks. But if you’re pretty certain you’ll be doing some destination shopping for gifts, clothing, or accessories you might want to pack a foldable woven or macrame-type tote for your haul.
Wherever you plan to travel it’s a good idea to make photocopies of your essential papers and cards (passport, itinerary, emergency contact, phone numbers, credit cards, I.D.) When you get to your destination, keep them somewhere secure, such as your hotel room safe.
Things like sunscreen, makeup, and toiletries can always be easily replaced, but others, like medications, can’t. Bring those in your carry-on, not your checked bags. And lastly, speaking of sun protection, be sure to pack at least one hat, maybe two!
A baseball cap for casual days at the beach pool or walking around town, and a packable roll up fabric or woven hat for when you want to be more stylish. And large sunglasses will jazz up any outfit.
Bon voyage!
Where are you traveling to this summer? Have you packed your backs? How many days ahead of time do you pack? What about last-minute packing? What have you included as travel essentials?

Answer: This setup prevents Muslims from having to lift our legs up dangerously high while trying to stick our feet in the sink one at a time. The alternative to that is we have to take a handful of water and pour it onto our feet below the sink causing the floor to get wet. Muslims also have to keep their feet clean before praying, which is obviously problematic in a bathroom where everyone pisses on the floor and walks with their shoes between the stalls and the sink, so you might see them trying to keep one shoe on while washing the other foot and then switching. It’s also why we take our shoes off before praying and use prayer rugs to avoid touching unclean things while praying.

Answer: This happens a lot in seawater. You see it in the beach all the time as a thick brownish foam. Basically, as marine creatures and so on (especially algae) decompose after death their bodies break down into various components. One of the processes is called saponification and basically converts fats into soap (fun fact, the same thing can happen to un-preserved humans). This coats the sand, gravel, rocks etc and then it is stirred up into foam by the water and (usually) high winds. On the beach it’s usually a mix of these animal byproducts, sand and other contaminants, it’s likely similar here but with less sand. In a canal it is likely stirred up by the wake of watercraft.

It all begins with the precious coordinating shorts and tops. The adorable dresses. The bright flowers, pretty butterflies, and there are even the special days we can dress them all matchy-matchy. We are so good at this. We rock parenting.
We’ve survived the long winter with its muddy boots, cumbersome coats, crusty hats, and lost gloves. We made it through spring, in which we only broke three umbrellas. Now that it’s summer, we are in love with fitting them all with matching summer dresses. We are giddy over it. We can’t get enough.
We fix their hair. We put on cute sandals. We take too many pictures because they just look so very adorable.
We’re so proud of the fantastic Hawaiian shorts we scored off the Children’s Place clearance rack. We make sure that the shirt he wears with them matches just right. We make him stop playing long enough to turn around and let Mom get a quick picture.
We’re proud of how the bow matches the shoes. Seriously, will this cuteness ever stop? We can’t even handle it.
Wait a minute. Do the sunglasses match the entire outfit? I believe they do. Who cares that she’s playing in a hole and about to be covered in dirt?
This leads me to the next summer outfit “give a care” phase. Things are starting to get messy. I mean literally, like everyone is getting really dirty. We have been playing outside for hours every day, so we are unable to keep up with the laundry. The shirt that matches the pants hasn’t made it to the drawer yet because it hasn’t been washed. Two of the three matching dresses aren’t hanging in the closet and we don’t feel like searching for them. So we give up on dressing them alike and simply appreciate that we are…dressing them. These children are their own unique persons, after all. We can get behind this. The babies and their non-coordinated outfits are incredible. And at least they are clean. We celebrate this.
It has come to our attention that some of the shorts we bought to go with the shirts are a couple of sizes too big. But we’re at the bottom of the pants drawer, pulling from what’s left before we can finally sort and put away the clean laundry. So we put on the too-big shorts and hope they don’t fall off when she walks around.
We are so in love with this sun dress!!!! But we do ask ourselves what we were actually thinking when we bought the white fabric print. Have we not been parenting for quite some time? Don’t we realize that white dresses don’t stay white? The handprints on the house behind the child remind us that things get dirty very quickly at our house. We decide to take a picture of the darling in her precious dress before it gets ruined forever.
NOTE: The child isn’t wearing shoes. Shoes, we’ve decided, are complicated. We pretend that the reason we often let them go barefoot is that we know something about “earthing” and claim that we are thrilled to sync our kids’ bodies to the rhythm of the earth. Bless.
We aren’t sure about clothes anymore and we’ve decided to stop trying to pretend like we care very much. We’ve become far too busy trying to keep the sand in the actual sandbox, submitting as evidence the large pile of sand that fell out all over the couch last time we changed a diaper. We decide that as long as the children have actual clothes on, it doesn’t really matter if they match or not. Just get dressed, we say. Put on whatever you find in your drawer.
We can no longer find a matching pair of sandals. We do have a left shoe, size 5. But a right one? No idea. We think it might be under the trampoline or in the bottom of the clothes hamper, but there’s no time to look right now. So we grab the winter hiking boots because they are by the door and they still fit. Socks are optional.
The four-year-old has also given up on actual clothes because he is now obsessed with swimming suits. He decides to wear them all day and all night because they are very, very comfortable. We don’t turn on the sprinkler or go to the pool. (We did that last week; why would we do that to ourselves again?) We just let him wear his swimming suits – to the library, to church, and to the grocery store. Bonus points: they don’t require him to wear underwear. He is thrilled about this convenience.
Meanwhile, the three-year-old has chosen to wear a pair of last winter’s pants that are now a size too small. We don’t care though. We decide that they have become capris and chalk it up to a parenting success because at least the child is wearing pants. I’m so serious.
After about three days in the blue suit, he decided to change to the green one. Because it has a matching hat. To complete the ensemble, he has found that his winter mittens are good for digging. We’re all so tired at the end of the day that he falls asleep as-is, coated in dirt, and we don’t argue about this. We note that his outfit does actually match, from hat to shirt to trunks. So we feel like this is a win.
We have completely given up on keeping the children clean. Baths are worthless. Clothes are becoming disposable. We no longer pre-treat stains because what even is the point? We decide to strip the children down outside before heading to the bathtub in hopes that all the dirt inside the diaper will stay outside where it belongs. We’re tired of vacuuming the couch.
The matching dresses from earlier this summer? Well, those sure were cute. The dresses have turned brown now, as have the children who wear them. What do you have to say for yourself, child?
Every once in a while, we actually accomplish pajamas. As in, sometimes we proudly bathe the children at night and put them in appropriate sleepwear like all the good parents are doing. The next morning, the kids inevitably head outside before getting dressed but we find that we’re actually thankful that they are covered in pj’s and not riding their bikes in their boxer briefs.
We have completely given up on clothes. Dirt is their garment. We turn our entire focus on simply keeping the children alive. We plan to dress them in clothing again once the weather turns cold enough to make it a requirement.
We feel quite sure that when the leaves turn and it becomes sweater weather, we’re going to be amazing at finding all of our children a wardrobe full of adorable matching sweaters and boots. They’ll look fantastic in their new jeans and trendy flannels. Their vests will match their khakis and their loafers will be fresh. We’ll belong on the cover of a magazine.
Yes, just let us get through summer and we’ll start anew in the fall. You can count on us.

]]>What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. We have now reached the fancy-pants conclusion to our Feels like Summer style-scenario trifecta. Suit up fellas. “But it’s too hot to wear a suit.” Nonsense. Wool, especially lightweight/tropical wool, is nature’s tech fabric. You’ll feel much better in a tropical wool suit than in an all cotton pair of chinos and a polo. Try it and you’ll never go back.
The Suit: Spier & Mackay Warm Weather Weight Light Gray Wool Suit – $428. A new arrival for Spier, just in time for summer. 3-season, warm weather weight, breathable, light-gray wool. Lined in Bemberg Cupro which should breathe much better than a cheaper lining. Available in slim fit or a more athletic-leaning contemporary fit.
The Pocket Square: Banana Republic Silk Print Pocket Square – $22.39 w/ BRAFF20 ($40). Looks like something from a high end fancy Italian designer. Extra 20% off code BRAFF helps of course.
The Shirt: Banana Republic Premium Poplin Dress Shirt in Light Blue – $90. Or whatever your favorite light blue dress shirt happens to be. Just don’t wear a heavier oxford style weave. You’ll feel like you’re stuck under a duvet. Relatively speaking. The More Affordable Option: Target Goodfellow Performance Dress Shirt – $33
The Sunglasses: Carfina Tortoise Frame/Grey Lens Polarized Sunglasses – $28. Stumbled across this brand on Amazon by accident. They get recommended a lot, in their various shades and frame styles, because they’re surprisingly nice for the price. And the dark tortoise frame + gray lenses makes for a combination that goes with almost anything. In-person look/review can be found here.
The Watch: Timex 40mm Midtown Chronograph – $159. The latest dress-chronograph design from Timex. Not wearing a tie means you can put a little extra “visual weight” on your wrist, without looking like you’re drowning in accessories and baubles. If you like dressier looking chronographs, and have one, this is the time to wear it.
The Belt: Nordstrom Newman Reversible Leather Belt – $49.50. A basic, reversible, do-anything dress belt. Ships and returns for free.
The Shoes: Made in Italy Antonio Maurizi Cap-Toe Monk Strap – $189.95. Antonio Maurizi is one of those brands that’s carried at Nordstrom Rack… yet seemingly never is carried at mainline Nordstrom (nor are they ever at their “full MSRP). They’re sort of the Italian shoe brand version of a “direct to video” movie. But! Under $200 feels like a fair price. Made in Italy, they’re sleek, they might be blake stitched, and the slim rubber sole will keep you upright on slick surfaces. The More Affordable Option: Nordstrom Dale Cap Toe Monk Straps – $99.95.
The Socks: Allen Edmonds Merino Cool Mid-Calf Socks in Navy – $18.50. Before any #menswear snobs have a cow, yes the “rule” is to match your socks to your trousers, but since we’re going tie-free with a light blue shirt, a little extra contrast + color with your socks looks just about right.

Keeping your garage organized requires proper planning on how to best use your space and maximize storage.
Our garage is one of the least used areas in the house, but it is also the easiest dumping place where everything is put in when not being used.
Organizing all the cluttered items accumulated in the garage may seem impossible to handle, but it can be done.
So, I am sharing with you some of these garage organization ideas to get all of the clutter under control. With a little planning and organizing, you can get a well-organized garage in no time.
Looking for a mudroom space? Why not turn your garage entry into one? A small space next to the entryway is the perfect spot to hang umbrellas, hats, coats, and backpacks. It's also a brilliant idea to put in a shoe cubby or storage bins to put all your shoes away.
With some bungee cords, you can create a ready-access cage where you can store all your sports balls quickly against the wall and kids can easily grab one at the bottom without unloading all the ones on top.
Make use of your overhead spaces to store your seasonal or frequently used stuff to keep them out of the way. It’s ideal to put a label or use stackable clear plastic bins to know what’s inside and keep them dust-free.
Give your lawn and gardening tools their place, out of the way, yet easy-to-access spot with these simple and inexpensive PVC organizers. Grab a PVC pipe and cut them into holders for your rakes, shovels, and tools.
This screwdriver rack will keep your tools in their place. This is such an easy and inexpensive project to make. You may use pieces of scrap wood and drill a few holes in it. Then, cut some brackets for mounting, and you now have a neat and sturdy tool organizer.
Storing all your garden tools can be tough – they are long and short, or heavy and light. And, this garden tool rack is a perfect solution to the problem in no time at all. Using a couple of planks from a pallet, your garden tools will be organized without spending a fortune.
Forget those times when you had your tape dispensers lying on your desk. It's time to make your own wooden tape dispenser for your garage. This is a brilliant idea to keep track of your tapes.
Have problems with some Razor scooters lying all over the place? Then it's time to allocate a scooter parking area!
Decide on how many scooter stalls you want, get the stall measurements right and cut your boards to length. Attach the boards square and straight to keep everything in place. This wooden scooter stand is very easy to use and fairly sturdy.
Keep your entire workshop clean and organized with this cordless drill storage. This will also serve as a charging station that will keep all your cordless tools in just one place, ready to be used and fully charged.

Your wall studs are the perfect way to keep all your things organized. Grab a couple of boards and attach them to the exposed studs and make different shelvings to hold a few stuff. Skip a space between your studs and add some hooks to hang your rakes, shovels, and other taller tools.
Collapsible workbenches are easy to make and require minimal supplies. Just fold it up after using it and you instantly have extra space. No need to move a workbench around the garage anymore!
Hanging jars under the shelves is the best storage solution for your garage. Just drill the lids under the shelves and screw your mason jars in. An easy and simple way to store your nails, screws, and bolt. Plus, it's a perfect opportunity to upcycle mason jars.
Putting labels is perhaps the most important part of an organization. You will easily know what's inside every container, tub, and bin without knocking down everything inside.
Label the containers with taped-on labels or dry erase markers for easy re-labeling. Your garage is so much better organized when everything has its own place and labels to go with it.
Use an empty wall space in your garage to hang a shoe organizer and place your spray paint cans in the pouches. This spray paint organizer allows you to see the color you need and grab it without unloading every other can on the drawer or shelf.

There’s an unspoken rule that an entryway should serve as a drop-off point for all sorts of gear—shoes, coats, mail, and keys are just the start.
And while some homes have a mudroom, hall closet, or garage with dedicated storage, others lack the necessary framework for concealing clutter.
With that in mind, we turned to professional organizers for their tried-and-true tips for bringing a little more method to the madness that can be a home’s entry.
In a mudroom or entryway, function should always come first, says professional organizer Lucy Milligan Wahl, founder of LMW Edits. “You can make any system look good, but you have to create it first,” she says.

Everything from a home’s layout to your lifestyle and even the climate can affect the way the area is arranged.
If you live in a region where it’s always raining, having a dedicated and easy-to-reach spot for umbrellas and rain gear is important. If your family is involved in a heavy rotation of sports and music lessons, you might want to carve out a nook for the gear they’ll be toting back and forth.
Finally, think about how often you’ll be able to organize the space—and be realistic about it.
“Are you willing to put in a few minutes every day to tidy up or does it all need to be grab-and-go?” Wahl says. Once you’ve figured that out, analyze your space and make a thoughtful plan from there.
If your home is lacking a mudroom or an entryway altogether, you may have to fashion one.
“First, find a space that is a good one-stop-spot for jackets, shoes, bags, and more—a catchall on the way in and out where your family can store things and have easy access to coming and going,” says home improvement and lifestyle expert Kathryn Emery of Be the Best Home. It doesn’t need to be a huge area; all you really need is a little bit of wall space.
Carving out a kids’ zone can be a helpful way to encourage them to stay tidy—or something close to it. Emery suggests dedicating a cubby or shelf for each child, to help them form a habit of stowing their belongings the moment they walk in.

“A bench with storage drawers is great for kids, as they are low to the ground and simple to get in and out of,” she says.
Though if you’re looking for a more simple approach, wall-mounted hooks are the way to go. Be sure to install them at a height the little ones can easily reach for convenience when hanging coats and bags.
Swivel hooks, which can often feature three to five movable hooks, are a great option for maximizing a space and keeping one person’s items confined to a dedicated spot, Emery says. And if you have enough wall space, install a few of them in a row.
The Shopping List
• Oversize Hammered Metal Wall Hook, $40 at Pottery Barn
Shop more wall hooks: Amazon, Target, Wayfair
• Safavieh Damien 3-Drawer Wood Storage Unit, $250 at Walmart, $281 at Home Depot
Keys, wallets, and similarly sized items can easily get lost in the shuffle, so it’s always worth having a dedicated spot for them. “Use containers that are just large enough for the items you need,” Wahl says.
Photo: Tria Giovan/GAP Interiors
Keys can go in a small dish or tray, phones can live on a charging station, and mail can be stacked in trays, Wahl says.
Take things a step further and give each member of the family their own tray to make the process a bit more streamlined. The entry is an area that’s already filled with lots of stuff, so avoid adding anything extraneous because it will instantly become clutter.
“The area should be for the things your family uses on a daily or near-daily basis,” the organization expert says.
Shop mail and key organizers: Amazon, Target, Walmart, Wayfair
If you have more belongings than storage space in your entryway or mudroom, a freestanding cabinet can be a good solution. One that incorporates an array of useful features—think a coat rack, shoe holder, and bench—can be a great way to consolidate the basics into one neat zone.
Photo: Kilito Chan/Getty Images
The sort of cabinetry you choose to bring in can include features like a clothing rod, drawers, hooks, or shoe shelves, says certified professional organizer Schae Lewis of Mission 2 Organize. It all depends on your needs.
Play to the weaknesses of the area. If you’re lacking a designated zone for a specific category, be it shoes, coats, or bags, find a storage unit that can cater to that.
“If you are creating the space from scratch without any cabinetry, plenty of hooks and a shoe solution are crucial for this space,” Lewis says.
The Shopping List
• Vasagle 3-in-1 Coat Rack, $68 at Wayfair, from $70 at Amazon
• Godishus Wardrobe, $150 at Ikea
• 6-Tier Shoe Storage Cabinet, $45 at Amazon

]]>Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend or a bit earlier. Five of the better sales are below, plus bonus sales if need be. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
Ends this weekend. 30% off is as good as it gets for Target and their men’s clothes. It also seems like they’ve taken their foot off the gas lately when it comes to sales and promos. So if you like Tar-zhay, and you’re in the market for some summer goods, now’s a pretty good time. The All in Motion Jersey Performance Polos are of particular note. See the review in Polopalooza over here.
Ends tonight. And unless you’re shelling out for super-express jet-pack powered shipping (or you live near their Orlando HQ and can pick it up), can’t imagine it’ll get there in time for Father’s Day on Sunday. Shipping cutoffs might already be past, who knows. But twenty percent off is still quite nice for FFF. And being that Shawn (the head man at FFF) has resisted making a valet tray for yearrrrrrs… now’s the time to make him make as many as possible. C’mon Shawn. They’re handy. Some of us like to put borders around our clutter to keep it looking less like clutter! Also: That Money Clip in black with brass = perfect.
Spier & Mackay’s new $298 Red Label line might be great, but a lot of us prefer/are hooked in their “Core Line” of suits. Bemberg linings, two fits to choose from (Slim or a more athletic leaning Contemporary), and nice, 100% Australian Merino Wool from Dino Filarte. What you get for what you pay is nothing short of incredible with Spier’s core line of suits. So much so that they’re often out of stock. Looks like they just restocked Charcoal, Medium Gray, and Navy.
Feels like a lot of the same type of shoe (mainly lighter weight knit-upper stuff), but some of the prices are… kind of absurd. Part of an ongoing week of deals thing adidas has running. Might be worth checking back tomorrow and over the weekend if you’re a fan of the brand with three stripes.
Ah HA. Finally got some confirmation on just what the heck is going on with the polarized Wayfarers that went on steal alert earlier this week. It’s a sneaky additional 30% off Ray-Bans sale at The Rack. Not a lot of models available at post time, but the polarized wayfarers are about as versatile as it gets. Free Shipping doesn’t kick in until $89, and remember that free returns only count if you can get it back to a physical Rack brick and mortar location. Otherwise you’ll be deducted $9.95 for a return label. 30% off promo runs through June 24th.
These dumbbells adjust to weigh anywhere from 10 to 80 pounds in 10-pound increments, and you can add on a set of eight 1.25-pound magnet weights to provide more possibilities. The adjustment process is quick and simple; twist the dial on the end of the handle to select the proper weight plates. The Snode dumbbells are notably made of mostly metal, which makes them extremely durable. Due to the high-quality construction and ease of use, the Snode Adjustable Dumbbells could be your next great purchase.
These adjustable dumbbells offer weights ranging from 10 pounds to 80 pounds in 10-pound increments and are almost entirely made from metal.
Since each weight plate weighs five pounds and ranges from 10 to 80 pounds in 10-pound increments, a pair of these adjustable dumbbells replaces eight pairs of dumbbells. You have the option to add eight magnetic plates, which allows you to adjust in two-and-a-half and five-pound increments. Adjusting the weight is extremely easy; just twist the mechanism on the end of the handle, and it’ll select the plates you need.
The chrome-plated iron handles are fully knurled to provide a solid grip at all times, and they’re about 35.5 millimeters in diameter, thicker than Snode’s closest competition, Nuobell’s 32 mm grips. We also think the cast iron-crafted cradles are a brilliant touch; you don’t have to worry about snapping any plastic as you place the dumbbells back in to adjust between supersets or drop sets.
In fact, aside from the nylon adjustment mechanisms, these dumbbells are made entirely from metal. This is a rarity across the market, meaning they might be the most durable option out there. While the $800 price tag (per pair) may not fall within everyone’s price range, we think the longevity of these bells provides excellent value.
The base price tag for a pair of Snode Adjustable Adumbbells is around $800, but the add-ons could increase the price to over $1,000. While the $250 cast iron stand may not be essential for everyone, we think adding the magnet weights is worth the extra money, bringing your total to about $835. Your purchase comes with a two-year warranty, but if you want to extend it, the one-year plan is about $30, while the three-year plan is roughly $70.
If you decide to go all in with the weight plates, stand, and three-year extended warranty, you could spend around $1,150. If that’s too much up front, Snode will allow you to finance this purchase through Affirm. There are much cheaper options on the market (you can pick up a set of NordicTrack adjustable dumbbells for $400), but the longevity and design make these superior to those cheaper options with plastic components.
The Snode Adjustable Dumbbells feature a primarily metal build aside from the internal adjustment mechanism, which means they might be the most durable adjustable dumbbells on the market. The cast iron weight plates feature a rounded design, and unlike many adjustable dumbbells, they are flat on the ends. This is a nice touch since it prevents you from stabbing yourself in the quads with any protrusions as you go to get set up on a weight bench for some shoulder presses or bench presses.
When the weight is maxed out, these dumbbells are a shade over 18 inches long, which is a couple of inches longer than a fixed 80-pound dumbbell. And when stored on the cradles, each dumbbell takes up about as much space as a shoe box. The chrome-plated iron handles feature a knurled pattern to provide a solid grip while you lift, and they’re about 35.5mm in diameter. Since these are slightly thicker than the competition, you might even increase your grip strength and forearm strength in the long run.
The Snode Adjustable Dumbbells replace up to eight pairs of traditional dumbbells. But by purchasing the set of eight 1.25-pound magnet weights, that number jumps to 24 pairs, making them one of the most extensive options available.
Adjusting the weight only takes a few seconds, and the flat cast iron dumbbell heads will come in handy when you set up for specific lifts, like a bench press. If you’ve ever set up for your lifts with some loadable dumbbells, you know how uncomfortable it can be to have a piece of metal digging into the top of your knee. Plus, the all-metal build means these dumbbells just may outlast you.
To adjust the weight increments on the Snode Adjustable Dumbbells, simply twist the adjustment mechanism at the end of the handles. The selected weight is displayed in a plastic window next to the knob, which looks good and is more durable than stickers that may fall off over time.
If you purchase the magnet weights, you’ll adjust your weight, pull the dumbbells out of the cradles, and then stick them to the dumbbell heads.
The Snode Adjustable Dumbbells on their own will replace eight individual dumbbells, with weights ranging from 10 to 80 pounds, making them an outlier, as most adjustable dumbbells cap out around 50 to 55 pounds. The downside is that you can only adjust these bells in 10-pound increments unless you spend an extra $40 on the set of 1.25-pound magnet weights.
Regardless of experience level, ten-pound weight jumps can be too heavy for accessory exercises, like a Y Raise. This leads us to think adding the magnet weights is worth the money since it enables you to add micro-adjustments, bumps up the max weight to 85 pounds, and allows you to progressively overload your muscles at your own pace.
We’re big fans of the chrome-plated iron handles on these dumbbells. Not only does the chrome provide a nice aesthetic, but they’re also fully knurled. While knurling is typically a preference feature that varies from person to person, these moderately-knurled handles give you a solid grip without exfoliating your hands every time you lift. But, if you’re looking for an ergonomically designed handle (meaning the middle is thicker than the ends), you’ll need to look elsewhere since these are 35.5mm throughout.
The cast iron weight plates on the Snode Adjustable Dumbells are rounded and feature flat heads. Those who like performing push-ups or burpees with dumbbells in their hands may not enjoy the roundness, as they’re bound to roll around on you a bit during those exercises, but the flat face provides a level of comfort that many loadable dumbells cannot.
We also love that no plastic is found on the weight plates. Other brands use plastic notches to attach the plates, which can wear down and break over time. Since there aren’t any on these, you won’t have to worry about excessive wear and tear.
These adjustable dumbbells offer a compact solution for those who want the utility of a full set of dumbbells without taking up a ton of room. When positioned in the cradles, they only require 19.29” x 7.48” x 7.87” to be housed, making them an excellent choice for those tight on space.
These are adjustable dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells are ideal for those challenged with available space in their workout oasis; they’ll save you money, too. Without needing to purchase an expensive storage rack, you’ll have the scratch to purchase even more equipment, like a kettlebell or a sweet new weight bench.
One of the best things about dumbbells is that you don’t need much space to get a solid workout in. However, taking them outside on a pretty day or simply moving them around can be a pain since you have to take multiple trips. While you’ll have to take a couple of trips to move the bells and the cradles, it sure beats the heck out of moving eight individual dumbbells.
On their own, the Snode Adjustable Dumbbells measure 18.11” x 6.68” x 6.68”, and when in the cradles, they’re 19.29” x 7.48” x 7.87”. This is a game-changer for those cramped on available space, as you can stash them virtually anywhere. Since they’re not much bigger than a shoebox, you can slide them under your bed, put them in the closet, or simply place them in the corner of a room.
Snode includes a two-year manufacturer warranty on these dumbbells upon purchase, including a warranty that covers drops up to 32 inches, which is impressive. If you’re used to throwing your dumbbells around like you’re in a CrossFit box, you can always purchase an extended plan.
You can purchase these adjustable dumbbells directly through the Snode Sport website.
You can reach Snode’s support team by emailing them at support@snodesport.com, or you can chat with a team member on their website.
It’s tough to beat the convenience that adjustable dumbbells bring to the table, and that’s especially true with the Snode Adjustable Dumbbells. The adjustment mechanism is straightforward to use, and purchasing a pair will replace sixteen individual dumbbells. Plus, if you buy the magnet weights, that number goes way up, and you can increase the weight incrementally. Not only do they require a fraction of the space, but they’ll also free up some money in your bank account so that you can add some more home gym essentials into the mix.
Durability is the name of the game here, too, as the mostly metal build leads to a product that can withstand drops from at least 32 inches. This gives you some assurance that they won’t break on you if you drop them while going to failure on a seated shoulder press or a dumbbell bench press. The chrome-plated iron handles are about 36 mm in diameter, so you can potentially increase your grip strength and forearm strength; plus, they’re fully knurled, so you can maintain a solid grip while lifting. While the $800 price tag per pair may be a bit too steep for some, we think the durability and longevity of the Snode Adjustable Dumbbells make them well worth the money.
These dumbbells’ base price is around $800, but they could be as expensive as $1,150 if you purchase all of the add-ons. While these are some of the most expensive adjustable dumbbells on the market, we think the high-quality construction makes them worth the money.
Without the magnet weights, these dumbbells will replace eight pairs of dumbbells with weights ranging from 10 to 80 pounds. However, if you purchase the magnet weights, these can replace 24 pairs of traditional dumbbells.
To adjust the weight on these dumbbells, twist on the mechanism at the end of the handles, and you’re all set. The beauty of this design is its simplicity and the fact that you only have to twist one dial on each dumbbell.

]]>Espadrilles are an option, but they can feel a little too informal and beachy in some settings. What you need is something that at least implies that you’ve made an effort. This is where boat shoes (also known as deck shoes) really come into their own.
These laid-back moc-toe shoes are easy to slip on and off, low profile, go with everything (shorts included) and while nowhere close to even approaching ‘dressy’ they are a whole lot smarter than a pair of sneakers or plimsolls.
If you don’t already own a pair, it might be time to reconsider, and this guide will arm you with everything you need in order to make an informed purchase.
The clue is in the name. Boat shoes were originally designed to be worn on deck, providing grip and traction on slippery wet surfaces. They have a low slip-on design, but also feature laces that can be adjusted to really dial the fit in.
The unique zig-zag grip pattern on the original boat shoes made by Paul A. Sperry in the 1930s had an unlikely source of inspiration. When Sperry saw his dog running around on ice, he noticed that the animal rarely slipped. After inspecting the dog’s paws, he modelled the tread pattern on them and the first boat shoe was born.
These days, boat shoes aren’t just for on deck. The simple design and classic looks have made them popular casual shoes, and many versions no longer use the original sole design. Shoes like Timberland’s iconic 3-Eye Lug trade the thin rubber for a chunky commando tread, which gives the shoe a more rugged, filled-out appearance.
Traditionally boat shoes are made from leather, but this is by no means the only option when it comes to material. For added breathability, canvas is an excellent option that offers a more casual look.
You could also opt for suede, although it’s not that great in the wet, which is something to consider if you’re going to be using the shoes for their intended purpose at any point.
Classic boat shoes have thin, flat rubber soles with a zig-zag tread pattern for grip. It’s great on slippery decks, but not necessarily the most practical option when it comes to walking around on land as they can wear out quickly.
If you plan on walking around lots, it would pay to consider a slightly thicker, more robust sole.
Sperry’s Authentic Original shoe is to boat shoes what Chuck Taylor All Stars are to sneakers. A pair will set you back around £100, which is a good benchmark.
For premium versions from fancy labels using high-end materials, you can expect to pay north of this – anywhere up to the high hundreds for the most expensive options.
At the other end of the scale, it’s possible to pick up a budget version from a high-street shoe store for less than £30.
Direct-to-consumer brand Velasca is all about making the best possible shoes with the lowest possible price tag. All of the label’s shoes are handcrafted by highly skilled artisans in Italy’s shoemaking capital, Marche, including several styles of boat shoes.
The Capelèe is a classic deck shoe made in Italy using premium materials. It’s an elevated yet classic option that offers a step up from the usual go-to boat shoes.
There’s also the Gambaree, which offers a slightly smarter look, and the Giulietta, which has a slightly taller design that covers more of the ankle.
French workwear for your feet. How about that? We love a good bleu de travail jacket as much as the next person, so any brand that can bring the same strain of tasteful functionality to our shoe rack is a winner in our eyes.
Kleman has shod several public organisations – the French national railway, fire departments and police forces to name a few – but it also has a loyal civilian following, who rate the brand’s shoes for their quality and style.
Check out the Donato G VGT, which is a lovely sturdy option that’s handmade in France and features a nice chunky commando sole.
Sperry single-handedly invented the boat shoe, so where better to buy a pair from? The American brand’s Authentic Original deck shoe is one of the best sellers in the category, remaining almost unchanged in just shy of 100 years. Why? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
For those looking for something a little more modern, there are plenty of contemporary variations on the style too, including rubber options with drainage holes for maximum practicality on deck.
When discussing classic deck shoes, you might hear Sebago mentioned in the same breath as Sperry. This is another historic New England boat-shoe brand that has been doing its thing since the 1940s.
The Dockside is Sebago’s best-selling style, and fans argue that while they take longer to break in than Sperry’s alternatives, they ultimately end up being a more flexible, comfortable shoe. We’ll leave that to you to decide.
Founded in Maine in the 1940s, Quoddy has been producing quality moccasins for decades, with a range that spans everything from ranger boots to boat shoes.
There are several boat shoe styles available to order from stock, or you can have Quoddy create a made-to-measure pair just for you.
Timberland’s 3-Eye Lug is almost as iconic as its original 6” boot. The style has found its way around a number of niche subcultures and its preppy yet slightly rugged looks make it an excellent all rounder for casual and smart-casual wear.
If you need proof of its cool factor, look no further than the collaboration with brand of the moment Aimé Leon Dore, which saw the silhouette reimagined by contemporary tastemaker Teddy Santis.
French brand Paraboot is best known for its Michael Derby shoes, which have become something close to uniform for a certain breed of urban cool guy. But there’s more to Paraboot than this one style, including a selection of premium, handmade boat shoes that are well worth a look.
We’re big fans of the Malo, which features a classic boat-shoe upper stitched onto a chunky sole. It’s made in Spain and has a Blake-stitched construction for easy resoling.
King of prep Ralph Lauren is no stranger to a deck shoe. This is one of the NYC label’s key footwear styles, tying in heavily with the overarching aesthetic of the brand.
There’s the Ranger Leather boat shoe, with a heavy commando sole and thick leather uppers, or the Merton, which is more of a classic flat-soled deck shoe. Both are great options, but the Merton is probably better suited to summer wear.
Japanese label Visvim is known for its unique brand of dishevelled Americana chic, drawing inspiration from workwear, military garments and Native American designs.
The Hockney is a staple footwear style for the brand, featuring a boat shoe-inspired upper sat atop a sneaker-like sole. There’s also the Wallace, which is a chunkier version reminiscent of Timberland’s 3-Eye Lug. Both are, of course, ludicrously expensive.

!doctype>]]>The best home improvement projects improve your quality of living and have a good return on investment. A walk-in closet investment provides both of these benefits.
More homeowners are learning that walk-in closets can significantly enhance our living spaces.
Storing clothes and accessories isn’t the only thing walk-in closets are being primarily used for, either. Walk-ins also serve as luxurious, personal home sanctuary spaces that can fundamentally change your daily dressing routine, too.
Walk-in closets have also become an in-demand feature for homebuyers who want more storage room and functionality from their prime bedroom’s closets.
The ideal home for 59% of Canadian homebuyers includes a walk-in closet, according to a recent survey by real estate marketplace Zolo.
A survey by House Digest found that the most preferred type of closet for 79% of homeowners is a walk-in closet.
Whereas walk-in closets were once viewed as a niche amenity found almost exclusively in mansions, they’re more commonplace nowadays. Homes of all sizes and property values now include walk-ins.
Walk-in closets also have much more mainstream appeal nowadays because we see them so often on TV and streaming makeover shows, social media, and interior design websites.
Let’s find out why this home design trend is so popular and what benefits a walk-in closet investment provides.
We own so many things that it’s harder than ever to stay organized. Recent data from Statista shows that the closets of consumers worldwide had an average of 136 apparel items in them.
Untidy closets tend to spill over into the main bedroom area. They’re also more frustrating and time-consuming to use because it’s harder to locate specific items in the closet. One reason clutter and disorganization cause so much stress is that it makes us feel like we’re not in control of our environment.
Has it been years since you last saw the back wall of your master bedroom’s overstuffed reach-in closet? If so, here’s how a walk-in closet can be a wardrobe organization game-changer:
Smart homeowners considering a renovation project cast an eye toward the future and how their investment can pay dividends later on.
Architectural Digest recently analyzed the National Association of Realtors’ annual Remodeling Impact Report. Their article lists the best interior remodeling projects for return on investment percentage. Here are the top five results:
Remodelled closets have such an impressive return on investment and stand out to homebuyers for a few reasons.
For starters, most homes have fairly basic closets. In a lot of cases, not much has been done to update a master bedroom’s builder closet. Some may contain little more than a single rod and shelf. Naturally, a spacious, stylish walk-in closet with premium functionality will look positively heavenly in comparison!
A homebuyer who sees a tidy closet with plenty of storage capacity and practical functionality will envision how nice the space would be to use for themselves.
And the more luxurious a walk-in closet is, the more its “wow factor” goes up. A well-appointed walk-in tells potential buyers that you have high standards for your living space, which leaves a positive impression.
Walk-in closets with the right upgrades and high-quality materials don’t just give your home a competitive edge to help it sell faster, it can boost your selling price, too.
The ample space available in a walk-in closet allows you to design to your heart’s content. It can be as simple or elaborate as required.
Here are some popular walk-in closet ideas worth considering for your custom design:
The beauty of custom closets is that you have a lot more design options compared to off-the-shelf closet organizing systems. You’re not limited by the “one size fits all” philosophy that comes with buying mass-produced closet organizer products.
Organized Interiors’ Classic and Monogram closet systems are ideal for walk-in closets. Choose from hundreds of options for cabinetry finishes and decorative hardware. The widths, depths, and heights of everything in your walk-in closet can be tailored to your specifications by our designers.
Yes, custom closets do cost more than DIY closet organizers, but for a good reason. As you can imagine, custom-designing, manufacturing, and installing a walk-in closet takes time.
The higher-quality materials that are used also increase the cost, but the result is a far superior product compared to budget-friendly walk-in closet systems. All of these details factor into how much you’ll recoup from a walk-in closet investment.
Walk-in closets are often designed with luxurious aesthetics in mind to produce stylish and upscale spaces to showcase your wardrobe and accessories.
Professional closet design companies like Organized Interiors can create bespoke walk-in closets with as many luxury features as you need.
Depending on your budget and requirements, it’s possible to create a home showpiece that inspires closet envy. If this is your goal, our fully customizable Monogram closet system is exactly what you’re looking for.
Lighting upgrades will improve the space’s functionality and can significantly impact the luxurious look and feel of a walk-in closet. Touches like adding an elegant chandelier and dynamic accent and ambient lighting features create a chic, boutique-style aesthetic.
Consider some of these other additions to help you style up a luxury walk-in closet:
Let’s expand on one of the walk-in closet investment benefits we’ve briefly touched upon: using it as a dressing space.
Having an all-in-one home area where you can store your wardrobe, get dressed and undressed, and do your makeup, hair, and grooming is invaluable.
A dedicated home dressing room becomes a personal sanctuary that provides privacy, comfort, and convenience.
The efficiency of your morning routine will improve and you’ll waste less time getting ready for work. This fosters a positive mindset and sets a better tone for the rest of your day.
At the day’s end, you’ll appreciate having a personalized, cozy, and tranquil space where you can unwind and reflect on your day.
Another reason a walk-in closet investment is worth it is because closet renovations are one of the most satisfying types of remodeling projects homeowners can do.
The Remodeling Impact Report’s “Joy Score” measures the enjoyment homeowners get from their remodels on a scale of 1 to 10. Closet renovations, along with a few other types of projects, scored a perfect 10 out of 10 for interior renovations. That’s higher than popular home improvement projects like bathroom and kitchen remodels.
A recent Today’s Homeowner study found that 39% of people who renovate do it to increase their enjoyment of their home. And 93% of homeowners who did a renovation felt their quality of life was better afterwards.
There are so many benefits of having an orderly walk-in closet with easy grab-and-go functionality, so it’s no wonder that homeowners love what a revamped closet space offers.
One more practical benefit of adding a walk-in closet is that it gives a spare room more functionality. Having an empty room in a home is nothing more than wasted space. An underused room doesn’t make the most of your home’s square footage, either.
The best location for a walk-in closet is in a spare room adjoining the master bedroom (or across the hall from it). Another benefit of using a spare room is that it allows you to take advantage of its natural light.
The room doesn’t have to be huge because you can do a lot with a walk-in closet design in a smaller room.
For some people, converting an entire room into a closet may seem extravagant and impractical. Keep in mind, however, that a walk-in closet with built-in storage allows you to get rid of bedroom furniture like a dresser and wardrobe.
A walk-in closet can even be designed to incorporate a home office space. As more people find themselves working from home, the cloffice has become a practical way to get more functionality from our living spaces. Learn more about a cloffice and whether it’s right for your home.
A walk-in closet investment transforms your master bedroom closet from ordinary to extraordinary.
Organized Interiors has walk-in and reach-in closet solutions to fit your style and meet your organizing needs.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the ins and outs of cooking tri tip to perfection – from reverse searing on the grill, to the precision of sous vide, to the convenience of the oven.
You may be asking, “What’s so special about tri tip?” Well, this triangular cut of beef from the lower sirloin has been a well-kept secret for a long time. Praised for its rich flavor and relatively low cost, it’s become a favorite among meat lovers. But – its unique shape and grain structure require some special attention when it comes to cooking.
We’re about to deep dive into the world of tri tip cooking, taking you step by step through different cooking methods, offering tips and tricks for achieving that perfectly tender, juicy steak. Whether you’re a seasoned grill master or an amateur chef, by the end of this you’ll be cooking tri tip like the pros.
So, are you ready to bring out the best in your tri tip? Let’s turn up the heat and get started. Remember, cooking isn’t just about following recipes. It’s about understanding the ingredients, the process, and the method. When it comes to tri tip, it’s about finding that sweet spot between the sizzle and the sear, the heat and the meat.
Try with some of our Homemade Cole Slaw!
Tri tip is a cut that really defeats people sometimes. You can’t just cook it like any old steak or roast. We’re going to break it all down for you and make it not only totally doable for you, but EASY.
Tri tip is a unique, triangular piece of meat sourced from the lower part of the sirloin. Hence the name “tri tip”. Each side of beef contains only one of these, making it a butcher’s delight.
While not as well-known as ribeye or filet mignon, tri tip has been gaining popularity for its rich flavor and tenderness. It’s especially beloved in California, where it’s often the star of barbecues, but it’s slowly winning hearts and palates across the globe.
A quality tri tip will be robust and rich in flavor. It’ll have a beautiful, deep-red hue, indicating its freshness. An essential characteristic to look for is marbling – the thin veins of fat running through the meat. These not only add to the juiciness of the steak but also greatly enhance the flavor when cooked.
The tri tip’s unique grain pattern is another vital characteristic. It runs in two different directions, meaning it requires special attention when slicing. Cut it against the grain, and you’ll get incredibly tender slices, perfect for any method of cooking. We’ll include a whole section on cutting tri tip below, including a handy graphic to help out.
When it comes to buying tri tip, you have a few options. Supermarkets often carry it, but it might be labeled under different names, like “bottom sirloin tip” or “Santa Maria steak”. Just ask your butcher if you can’t find it.
For the best quality, consider sourcing your tri tip from a local butcher or a trusted online meat purveyor. They often stock superior quality cuts from grass-fed or organic beef. Although these options might be more expensive, the flavor payoff is considerable. Remember, your dish is only as good as the ingredients you use.
If you want to splurge, pick up a Tri Tip from Snake River Farms.
Serve with some Homemade BBQ Sauce too!
When it comes to seasoning your tri tip, you don’t need to complicate things. A good cut of beef stands up on its own and doesn’t need to be buried under a mountain of spices and flavors. You can keep it as simple as a liberal sprinkle of salt and black pepper if you’d like.
However, if you want to experiment, feel free to introduce a blend of spices like garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika for an extra punch. I have had great success with our homemade beef rub too! It contains a little hit of horseradish powder.
The question of whether to marinate tri tip is one that’s sparked many a debate in the barbecue world. On one side, you have advocates who swear by marinating to tenderize the meat and infuse flavor. On the other, purists argue that a good quality tri tip doesn’t need more than salt, pepper, and fire.
Here’s my take: marinating can be a wonderful tool, especially if you’re dealing with a leaner cut. A simple marinade of olive oil, vinegar or citrus juice, and your chosen spices can work wonders in enhancing flavor. Is it necessary? No. Not if you buy good meat. Can it add amazing flavor? You betcha.
Try my Steak Marinade with this roast sometime and let me know what you think!
In the end, the decision to marinate comes down to personal preference. Experiment with both methods and see which results you prefer. After all, cooking is about finding your own unique style and taste.
Our Original Traeger Tri Tip!
Let’s tackle reverse searing, a method that flips traditional grilling techniques on its head.
It’s all about starting low and slow, then finishing hot and fast. Sounds counterintuitive? Well, the results speak for themselves. Reverse searing allows the meat to cook more evenly, offering an edge-to-edge consistent doneness, unlike traditional methods where the outer layers are more done than the center.
We use this method for our Smoked Tri Tip recipe, too!
Ready to give reverse searing a shot? Here’s how. Start by preheating your grill to a low temperature, about 225°F. Then place your seasoned tri tip on the grill grates, away from direct heat. Close the lid and let it cook slowly until it reaches an internal temperature of around 110-115°F. Use a wireless thermometer like the ThermoWorks Smoke or the Meater for best results.
Now, crank up your grill, gas griddle, or cast iron pan on the stovetop over high heat. Transfer the tri tip to direct heat and sear each side for a few minutes until a nice, crusty bark forms and the internal temperature rises to 125°F – 130°F for medium-rare.
Patience is the key to a successful reverse sear. Rushing the low and slow phase might result in uneven cooking. Make sure to rest your meat after the initial slow cook and before the final sear. This allows the juices to redistribute within the tri tip.
Keep a close eye during the searing phase, as the high heat can cause flare-ups. Turn your meat frequently to avoid over-charring. And of course, let your meat rest after the final sear. It helps the juices settle and gives you a juicy, tender tri tip.

Sous vide, French for “under vacuum”, is a cooking technique that offers unparalleled control over temperature. It involves sealing the food in a bag and cooking it in a water bath at a precise temperature. This technique ensures even cooking, preserves moisture, and enhances the flavor of your tri tip.
To sous vide your tri tip, start by seasoning your meat and sealing it in a vacuum bag. Set your sous vide machine to the desired temperature. For medium-rare, aim for around 125°F-130°F.
Submerge the sealed bag in the water bath and cook for about 4-6 hours. Once done, remove the bag, pat the tri tip dry, and give it a quick sear on a hot pan or grill for that appealing crust. Just like reverse searing, let it rest before slicing to let all of those liquids redistribute through the meat so it doesn’t end up on your cutting board instead of in your mouth.
Sous vide offers a few distinct advantages. Precision is the first one. With sous vide, you can dial in the exact doneness you prefer.
Another advantage is the juiciness and flavor preservation. By cooking the tri tip in its own juices, you’ll get a flavorful and moist end product. Lastly, sous vide allows for a convenient, hands-off cooking process, giving you the freedom to focus on other elements of your meal while your tri tip cooks to perfection.
Roasting in the oven is one of the simplest ways to cook a tri tip. It is a great option if your grill is buried in snow or the weather isn’t ideal for outdoor cooking.
Preheat your oven to 425°F. Season your tri tip and place it on a roasting rack set inside a roasting pan. Use a wireless thermometer and roast until the internal temperature reaches 125°F-130°F for medium rare. Make sure to rest the roast for 10-15 minutes before slicing for the best results.

Here’s the golden rule: always cut against the grain. The grain in a tri tip runs in two directions, which can make slicing a bit tricky. My advice is to slice the tri tip in half at the point where the grains change direction, then cut each piece separately against the grain. This will yield tender, mouthwatering slices, ready for you to enjoy.
Try your tri tip in my Grilled Steak Sandwich!
Sous vide gets a bad rap sometimes for making meat too soft. But here’s the thing: with the right temperature and time, sous vide cooks your tri tip to your preferred level of doneness while keeping it juicy and flavorful. It’s not about making the meat mushy, but about achieving consistent, precise results that you can replicate every time.
If your oven-roasted tri tip is hitting the plate more like shoe leather than juicy steak, it’s probably overcooked. That’s why a meat thermometer is your best pal when it comes to roasting. Aim for an internal temperature of 125°F-130°F for medium-rare.
Also, letting the meat rest after roasting is crucial. It allows the juices to redistribute within the meat, ensuring a tender and juicy bite.

]]>You’ll be a happy camper with these hacks! 🏕️
Try our frugal Dollar Tree camping ideas to make every trip a breeze! They’re easy camping hacks that will save you time and money! Camping can be one of the most fun, frugal vacations you can go on with your family.
Grab a mesh laundry bag and place your wet dishes in them to keep your dishes clean after washing them. Hang it up on a tree limb and the dishes will dry and stay clean from dirt or sand. Plus, you can use your mesh bag for its original intent during and after your trip if needed.
Not only will this camping hack look like you’re glamping, but it’s also a great way to make it easier to see around your campsite at night. Simply place your solar lights wherever you would like more light. They’d be useful near your tent poles, tent entry, close to the bathroom, the wood pile, and more! You may even be able to find some fun solar lights in-store depending on the time of year that you shop. Plus, they’ll be just as useful in your yard once you’re home. Win, win!
Dollar Tree’s glow sticks are always fun for the kids to use while camping and they make them easy to spot in the dark! Plus, glow sticks are also helpful camping ideas to place around the tent ties at night. This means people are less likely to trip on them when they’re exiting the tent.
Minimize tripping hazards by grabbing some pool noodles to place around your tent lines! All you have to do is cut a slit down one side of the noodle and wrap it around the lines. That way there will be less chance of any injuries if anyone does happen to run into them. Better yet, they’ll still be usable for the pool after your trip.
Make a simple and convenient camping toilet using a 5-gallon bucket and a pool noodle! You can get the full directions from PremeditatedSurvival.com. Many of our Hip readers also recommended using a trash bag, wood chips, dirt, or cat litter to make clean-up even easier. These are one of the best camping ideas you won’t regret having!
We’ve heard Dollar Tree’s cake carrier can be a little flimsy to hold a heavy cake. However, they couldn’t be more perfect to store paper plates and napkins! One of these genius camping ideas will keep all your essentials from flying away or getting dirty. As a bonus, they’ll also be in one place when it’s time to eat!
Ticks are going to be bad this year, so taking extra precautions while you’re out in the woods is a good idea. A lint roller is an easy way to stop ticks from crawling on the outside of your clothing before they can cause harm. Just be sure to do a more thorough check once you’re undressed and while showering too.
Hip Tip: Our favorite bug repellent is tick-resistant and so safe it’s considered edible!
These Dollar Tree stacking bins are great to use inside the tent. There are endless camping ideas for staying organized with these bins! From holding games, lighters, hand sanitizer, flashlights, bug spray, and so much more! Best of all, you can pack them up before you leave so unpacking once you get set up is a cinch!
Dollar Tree’s handheld broom with dustpan is the perfect size for keeping inside the tent to sweep up the dirt, leaves, and/or sand that may creep in throughout the day. Plus, they’re great for smaller kids to use, too!
You can use a Dollar Tree hanging shower caddy to keep random kitchen supplies, games, or toiletry items organized and in one spot. Simply hang it on the side of a tree, inside the tent, or on a shaded structure for easy access. Better yet, it’s an item you can use once you’re home too.
Shoe organizers from Walmart or Amazon will also work and will cost just a few bucks more.
You’ll need somewhere to put all of your trash during your trip. While you could hang a bag from any branch, this camping hack using a laundry basket will make it easier and more accessible for everyone. Plus, you won’t have to worry about the bag ripping if it gets heavy. Even better, traditional kitchen bags fit perfectly around the edge.
You could even consider getting two baskets and designate one for recycling and one for trash!
First, enjoy your Dollar Tree Tic Tacs, then reuse them for storing your spices! Upcycling these airtight containers will allow you to bring a smaller quantity of each spice. Plus, it will be a space-savings camping hack too!
Hip Tip: Get the most out of all your trash with our other clever upcycling ideas!
According to REI.com, you can keep your tent zippers gliding smoothly by applying a little bit of candle wax from an un-lit candle. Dollar Tree sells 6-packs of emergency candles for just a buck 25!
Be sure to grab a clothesline with hooks to have a convenient place to hang wet towels, socks, shoes, swimsuits, and other apparel. In fact, you may way to grab a few if you plan to wash your clothes while camping too!
Pick up this 6-pack of jumbo plastic clothespins and clamp them on the edge of your tablecloth to keep it from blowing away.
Hip Tip: Bring an old, fitted mattress sheet from home and wrap it over the table – then just throw it in the washing machine when you’re done for easy cleanup!
Grab some easy-to-pour condiment bottles if you see yourself whipping up some pancakes while camping. You can even pre-fill them before you leave if you have the time and a way to keep your mixes fresh and cool. Once you have them ready to go, all you have to do is squeeze them into the pan.
Or if you already have some glass canning jars with lids at home, you could use those instead. Just keep in mind that they’re much more breakable if dropped.
Hip Tip: To keep things even easier, you can pre-mix some oatmeal blends, pancake mixes, etc. with ingredients that can be kept at room temperature, like dried fruits & nuts, dry milk, and shortening!
Avoid having to search around for s’mores supplies by prepping ahead of time and keeping all the items together in a plastic container with a lid. Luckily, Dollar Tree has a lot of choices if you don’t already have something laying around! You can also use them to store clean plasticware or napkins to keep them from flying away or getting dirty.
Chances are you’re planning to grill food on your upcoming camping trip. In case you didn’t think of it, you can leave the heavy grill at home and make your very own charcoal grill for just a few bucks! Best of all, aluminum is endless recyclable so you’re not leaving much of a trace with this camping hack either.
According to Instructables.com, all you need for this camping hack is a foil pan, cooling rack, and charcoal. Keep your eye out in the store as some Dollar Tree stores usually sell small bags of charcoal around the summer holidays. That means you can create a grill for just a few bucks!
Hip Tip: Our simple queso on the grill is a delicious snack idea for your entire camping group!
Cut pieces of bar soap and place them inside a microfiber wash-mitt (found in the car section) or some bath sponges for convenient campsite scrubbing. Then just get the gloves wet when you are ready to wash and you won’t have to worry about dropping a slippery soap bar in the dirt.
Hip Tip: When the soap bar is dry, use a vegetable peeler to safely shave off the perfect amount of soap for each sponge.
Dollar Tree now has an 8-pack of shower caps which are genius camping ideas to cover your plates and bowls to keep pesky bugs away! What a fun camping hack to keep those not-so-fun mosquitoes and bugs away!
Tree also carries cute 2-pack Fly Swatters for just $1.25.
Grab two packs of these shower caps to use for your shoes! Since Dollar Tree’s shower caps come in packs of 8, you can use one pack for up to 4 people to slip over their shoes. This camping hack will help keep dirt out of your tent and/or limit the need to take your shoes off. You can also use them to place your dirty shoes in when packing up to keep any mud or dirt out of the car or backpack.
It’s always a good idea to bring a first-aid kit with you when camping. Dollar Tree sells many first-aid essentials from Band-aids to hand sanitizer to medicines and more.
Also, you may find these black toolboxes priced at just $1.25 which would be great for storing your first aid items.
You can never predict the weather! These ponchos may not be a camping hack, but they’ll keep you from getting drenched during necessary times like running from the tent to the bathroom or packing up the car when you can’t hold an umbrella.
Speaking of umbrellas, you may be able to find umbrellas at your local Dollar Tree if you want to bring one along.
Make an Instant camp lantern by wrapping an LED camping light and a rubber band around a jug of water! This works so well when you’re trying to move around at night and may help kids feel more safe at night too. This camping hack could be even more frugal if you already have a rechargeable headlamp at home too!
Hip Tip: You can make a frugal DIY headlamp in a pinch by clipping these LED camping lights to a headband around your head.
Dryer lint makes an excellent fire starter! Pack some lint in empty toilet paper rolls to take on your next camping trip. You can also use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel to help your match or lighter flame catch your tinder on fire.
Hip Tip: Some of our Hip readers also suggested using cotton balls or pads dipped in some wax as an effective waterproof fire starter! You could even take your camping hack one step further by making them ahead of time and storing them in a cardboard egg carton.
Planning meals ahead means a stress-free snack around the campfire! While you can definitely keep a list of everything you need on your phone, picking up one of Dollar Tree’s super frugal journals or planners will keep your vacation tech-free, and no one has to wonder what’s for dinner. 🙌
Check out our favorite camping recipes if you need more camping ideas. Many of them you can even prepare ahead of time:
Hip Tip: Chances are you’ll want to pack snacks for the drive to the campsite, and we’ve got you covered with this awesome Hawaiian Roll sandwich hack!
Documenting your whereabouts and itinerary are always great camping ideas especially if you have worried family and friends when you camp. While not everyone will have the ability to send photos day to day, documenting on a dry-erase board and snapping a photo is a fun way to keep track of your days and what you did.
Kids and adults alike will appreciate these cool camping ideas! You can create a fun, waterproof Tic-Tac-Toe board using just a few items from Dollar Tree. All you need are some foam pool noodles, a shower curtain, a marker, and some scissors.
Visit the Dollar Tree website for the full instructions or consider making your game even more frugal by drawing your board with chalk or masking tape!

!doctype>]]>Editor’s Note / Necessary Context: The male models. They lie in the grass. They stare at things. And on this website, some of us will give it a shot too. It certainly looks like this trend of male models lying in the grass isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Checkout this recent shot from the Spring/Summer 2023 BR Campaign:
It’s still happening! They can’t help themselves, those male models.
Since it’s such a resilient trend upon which society’s stability depends, our contributor DeJuan was like “let me give this a shot… with a summery twist.” We are now indebted to him forever. This is, of course, part satire. But it’s also part legit outfit inspiration. Because it’s best to never take oneself too seriously. Think you got what it takes to lay in the grass and stare at things? (and make a style scenario post out of it?) The Jacket: Quince Double-Brushed Stretch Overshirt Jacket – $49.90. An overshirt, also known as a shirt jacket or a “shacket “makes for a great layering piece during spring and early summer. Throw it on over a polo, tee shirt, or button down shirt for a smart layer without the relative formality of a blazer or sportcoat. Remove it if you get too warm.
The Polo: Charles Tyrwhitt Pique Polo in Orange – $99 ($59.75 if you buy four total polos and/or shirts). Polos are staples for spring and summer. Spice up your outfit with a brighter color like orange, tangerine, or salmon. The Less Expensive Option: GAP Pique Polo in “Icy Orange” – $24
The Pants: Target All in Motion Performance Golf Pants in Stone – $40. Recently featured in the Top 10 Affordable Performance Pants list, and I decided to give them a try. Nice, comfortable performance pants that work great for much more than golf. Available from Target in six different colors; I’m wearing the “stone” color in the pic at the very top of the post.
The Watch: Casio MDV Diver – $49.92. The Casio MDV-106, affectionately called the “Duro” by watch enthusiasts can be found for around $50. It’s a great value diver that has been featured often here on Dappered, most recently in “The Best Affordable Watches for Grads or Dads of 2023”. Makes for a great beater watch.
The Socks: Bombas No-Show-Socks – $16. No-show socks for the sockless look but with the benefits of wearing socks, mainly preventing blisters and odor.

]]>That’s according to a report Monday (June 5) by The Wall Street Journal, which names Big Lots and Walmart among the companies shutting down warehouses and/or laying off distribution workers as consumers begin to spend more on services.
“You’re starting to see demand slowing and they’re realizing, ‘Maybe we don’t need as much inventory, and if we don’t need as much inventory, we don’t need as many [distribution centers],’” Rob Handfield, a supply-chain management professor at North Carolina State University, told the WSJ.
The report notes that vacancy rates for warehouses are on the rise after a rush to snatch up spaces during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Amazon — which had expanded its fulfillment network during COVID — has begun scaling back its expansion, closing, canceling or postponing work on 115 U.S. warehouses in the past year, the report said, citing findings from logistics consultant MWPVL International.
This contraction has affected warehouse employment, with payrolls in that space reaching their lowest point since January 2022, and dropping by more than 41,000 jobs over the past year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
PYMNTS wrote last week that a number of merchants are embracing smaller footprints to cut costs and put more focus on customers.
“Marking a significant shift in retailer strategy, major stores determined to adapt to the reality of today’s economic landscape are overhauling their brick-and-mortar approach,” that report said.
“The move is being spearheaded by Macy’s, which is branching out from the traditional mall format in favor of the smaller strip mall format after investors voiced concerns of department stores becoming obsolete.”
The retailer has begun moving out of struggling malls in favor of smaller locations known as “Market by Macy’s.” At these storefronts, the company will offer a more curated inventory than at its main stores, emphasizing apparel, shoes, handbags and beauty items with prices that reflect the smaller scale.
But Macy’s isn’t the only well-known brand to use this strategy. Nordstrom recently said it was opening nine new Rack stores even as it closes larger locations and embraces deep discounts.
“With its long-established physical footprint, the recently reopened NYC mainstay, Century 21, is instead streamlining its inventory away from less profitable offerings,” PYMNTS wrote.
“Foot Locker is also abandoning malls as the shoe retailer struggles to find the right mix of omnichannel offerings for its customers. Even historically huge stores such as IKEA and Big Lots are getting into the trend.”

Try an innovative shoe shelf with a bench instead of a mundane old shoe mat. It combines comfort with convenience and is ideal for storing shoes while also working as a functional bench and decor. They come in various styles but are excellent for storing shoes of all sizes. Stylish, fun, and offering somewhere to sit, a shoe shelf with a bench is a great way to spruce up a room.
Unsurprisingly, shoe racks have a way of getting messy and dirty. Shoes often attract all kinds of dirt and mud. That’s why so many homes try a shoe shelf with silicone mats. They catch the dirt, keeping the area as clean as possible while protecting your kicks.
Add character, style, and class to your house with an elegant dark wood shoe rack. It’ll raise the level of your decor with a subtle yet charming appeal. It’s an efficient method for shoe storage with multiple shelves to keep the shoes organized, clean, and neat.
It’s common to have more shoes than space. That’s when a tiered enclosed shoe cabinet works out as the perfect solution. These creative storage options take up little space and are movable, allowing you to place them in any room around the house.
They also come in various designs, both vertical and horizontal, depending on the space. This type of shoe storage option is ideal for all types of shoe sizes and large families with a lot of shoes.
Boots often create an interesting problem. They’re usually long, take up a lot of space, and have an odd design. Boots have a way of messing up a shoe rack. A simple solution is to purchase an all-boot rack. Boot racks store the shoes in a stylish way and will keep the boots safe, avoiding a big tangled mess.
A repurposed cabinet is an excellent way to save money and create an original decor piece. There’s a good chance you’ll be the only person on the block with this type of shoe cabinet. Repaint and distress the cabinet to give it a stylish and rustic look. Since old cabinets usually have a lot of containers, there will be more than enough space for all your shoes. It’s a fun project that’ll make your shoe cabinet the “walk of the town.”

A multi-purpose entryway rack adds class and style to every house. It’s cool, chic, functional, efficient, and simplifies organizing. It has a shelf for shoes and hooks for jackets, hats, and bags. Extra shoe shelves are a great place to store other household items such as books, decor, or accessories.
Small spaces pose many obstacles for homeowners. Shoe storage can be quite a headache when there is little space. A built-in shoe closet can solve that shoe headache within seconds. It frees up a lot of space while adding cool and creative decor to any room.
Additionally, built-in shoe storage reduces clutter while enhancing the openness of the room. Many have cool designs that fit in any room of your house, adding style and creativity.
The closet door shoe rack is easily the most efficient way to store shoes. In theory, the closet is one of the most organized places in a house. Mounting the shoe rack on the door will keep your shoes clean and organize the closet. It’ll keep everything out of the way while still being easily accessible.
Nowadays, most people have a pair of sneakers, snow boots, fancy kicks, or gym shoes cluttering up their room. This is why people need more space for storage. One option, a recessed shelf, is perfect for large families or people with a ton of footwear.
It makes excellent use of the area by allowing you to store twice as many shoes. It also takes up little space and adds chic and functional decor to the room. A recessed shelf allows for ample space for various shoe sizes and styles. The shelf is the ideal decor for a small space while adding style too.
Many people like to keep their shoes by the door. Since that’s the case, most homes enjoy adding another element to use the space best. For example, a shoe shelf with counter space is chic while freeing up space.
The counter is perfect for storing keys or leaving notes. The extra space will allow you to get creative without worrying about shoes getting in the way. Plus, the shelf is perfect for decorating the room by adding some character.
Take efficient shoe organizing to new places with shoe hangers. Shoe hangers eliminate the need for storage space or boxes. Simply hang your favorite shoes on your wall with mounts. It makes for cool decor, requires minimal setup, and takes up zero floor or wall space.

Lots of people like to store their shoes near the front door, especially those who don’t like people walking through their house with shoes on. This is why a doorway shoe self is one of the easiest storage options.
They work best in a small apartment or condo that has limited space. The doorway shoe shelf adds style but is often compact. They fit perfectly next to any doorway, taking the decor to new levels.
Another great option is to place the shelf next to the couch. It’ll change the way you put your shoes on. No longer will you need to stand awkwardly against the wall to put on your favorite Jordans.
Get creative with shoe storage ideas with the vertical shoe rack. The vertical shoe rack is hugely popular and comes in different sizes, designs, and styles. The vertical shoe rack is ideal for a small space and for organizing various shoe types.
Have a lot of shoes lying around on top of each other? Need a solution fast? Well, look no further than tiered wall shelves. They’ll change the way you store shoes forever.
A tiered wall shelf makes excellent use of vertical space, giving the illusion of ample room. It’s a creative and efficient way to store shoes to decrease clutter. It adds a neat slice of decor to the room without taking up a lot of space. It also makes organizing and selecting shoes much more accessible. It’s impossible to go wrong with a tiered wall shelf.
A shoe rack with enclosed crates will change how you store your shoes. The design adds character and chic to any doorway. It’ll always keep your shoes neat, clean, and organized. The crates are big enough for every style and on top of that, the shoe rack slides into any closet or corner. Brilliant.
There are several creative ways to store shoes. It’s always great to repurpose an old piece of furniture. However, a new style is repurposing and mismatching old shoe racks. It’s a custom shoe rack that’ll free up lots of space while adding a unique style to the place.
Layered shelves allow you to get a shelf for each shoe design. Stack multiple shelves on top of each other to create a stunning shoe rack tower. The finished product will be a unique piece of decor nobody else owns. You can store rain boots, work shoes, and casual and summer footwear.
There’s always a solution for a cluttered and small space. A shelf compartment with coat hooks is perfect for a family with many little kids. It’s an open space that adds style and character.
It’s accessible, gives the illusion of a larger area, and adds style and convenience. It’ll keep your shoes and jackets off the floor while at the same time is easy for kids to grab their shoes to go on an adventure.
The vintage-style shoe rack isn’t only for the doorway. The chic and classic piece of furniture is ideal for the bedroom or walk-in closet. Vintage style is perfect for every shoe shape and design. Take your decor back in time while organizing your shoes.

Marking a significant shift in retailer strategy, major stores determined to adapt to the reality of today’s economic landscape are overhauling their brick-and-mortar approach. The move is being spearheaded by Macy’s, which is branching out from the traditional mall format in favor of the smaller strip mall format after investors voiced concerns of department stores becoming obsolete. In response, the company is leaving behind declining malls for smaller locations, dubbed Market by Macy’s. In these storefronts, the retailer will feature a more curated inventory than in their larger locations, focusing on apparel, shoes, handbags and beauty items with prices reflecting the smaller scale.
Macy’s isn’t the only household name adopting this strategy. Nordstrom announced it would be opening nine new Rack stores even as it closes its larger locations and leans into deep discounts. With its long-established physical footprint, the recently reopened NYC mainstay, Century 21, is instead streamlining its inventory away from less profitable offerings. Foot Locker is also abandoning malls as the shoe retailer struggles to find the right mix of omnichannel offerings for its customers. Even historically huge stores such as IKEA and Big Lots are getting into the trend.
And as illustrated in the March PYMNTS “Consumer Inflation Sentiment” report, these retailers may be on to something.
It is pretty clear that consumers continue to cherish convenience and ease along with discounts and more affordable prices — factors that smaller merchants may be better able to appeal to. While those responses may not seem revelatory on the surface, it is also notable that so many retailers are making these moves to reflect this consumer behavior instead of expecting shopper habits to bounce back after some uncertain normal presumably returns.
With a main focus of slimming down in order to reduce overhead, retailers are meeting their customers where they are. Instead of expecting shoppers to come pouring through their doors as was common during the golden era of malls, this more realistic approach to current shopper habits may put these forward-thinking brands ahead of the competitive curve.
After all, even when prices do start to better meet wages again, there’s still eCommerce and cross-border merchants to compete with. With their refocused efforts, brands such as IKEA and Nordstrom may find themselves better positioned to meet whatever economic future lies ahead.

Screen time is always a concern when it comes to parenting, which makes picking up the dice for Dungeons & Dragons an appealing activity for a fantasy-loving family. The nearly half-century-old tabletop game is all about imagination, with some tactile rulebooks, dice, and perhaps a miniature or two as aids. However, D&D is also much more complex to play than just booting up a gaming console. The rules can be confusing to newcomers, and prepping a session can be time-consuming for even a veteran dad Dungeon Master. That’s why the D&D brand is preparing a massive update to the rules of the game, in large part to make them more accessible to players — and Fatherly was there in May 2023, when they shared details about what’s in the works.
I have some experience with playing D&D with my family. Or, rather, not playing D&D with my dad. Back in the ‘80s, when my dad was in his 20s, he went on a trip around the world with two of his college buddies. They had plenty of fun adventures, but there was also, as one might expect, a lot of downtime during their travels, and my dad filled that with Dungeons & Dragons. Armed with an increasingly beat-up copy of the Dungeon Master’s Guide, my dad would torment his friends with monsters, labyrinths, and fiendish puzzles. I heard all about one such puzzle, where his friends were confronted with a small empty shelf and a closed door. With loads of time on his hands, my dad let his friends get increasingly frustrated by their inability to get the door open. (The answer to this riddle: The shelf was a shoe rack. Their characters had to take their shoes off in order to get inside.)
Yet, despite Dungeons & Dragons being an important part of my dad’s journey, we never played D&D together when I was a kid. Don’t get me wrong — we played lots of fun games together, but D&D never came up. I don’t blame him! This was in the ‘90s and ‘00s when D&D was in something of a fallow period before the release of the game’s Fifth Edition in 2014. That moment marked the start of an unprecedented explosion in D&D’s popularity, which has basically been steady until 2023.
And, now, the team behind D&D is working hard on a major update to the game, one that will tweak a bunch of mechanics and result in a new set of rulebooks that will make it much more accessible and intuitive to play. It’s the next generation of D&D — and part of that means making the gameplay feel intergenerational. What didn’t pass down from my dad to me, will now be much smoother.
Even before the update — which is in playtesting now and will make its official debut in 2024 — D&D was a different sort of game than what my dad played decades ago. “In the past, it was a very mechanical game,” Kyle Brink, D&D’s executive producer, explained at a press preview event at Wizards of the Coast’s Seattle headquarters. “The focus of today’s play is on storytelling.”
Whereas my dad’s version of D&D (the game’s Second Edition), lent itself to meat-grinder dungeons and unforgiving traps and puzzles, modern D&D is very story-driven. Players tend to get much more invested in their characters, opting for roleplaying rather than just brute-forcing their way through dungeons. Podcasts and “actual-play” web series like The Adventure Zone, Rude Tales of Magic, and Critical Role had made watching people play D&D into a huge genre of entertainment. (Then there’s the new hit movie, Honor Among Thieves, which quite neatly exemplifies the sort of adventure that many modern tables aspire to.)
But, in order to see those stories play out, you need to understand the rules. And if you’re new to the game — or even if you’re returning to it — the current Fifth Edition’s rulebooks leave something to be desired. The current Dungeon Master’s Guide explains different forms of authority for a fantasy city in the first chapter. Dice and table rules (you know, the basics of gameplay), don’t come up until Chapter 8. Really!
“We are working on new ways of creating experiences that are all about getting people playing D&D as quickly as possible with as few barriers to entry [and] providing tools for people to play across generations,” Jermey Crawford, D&D’s game design architect and one half of the brain trust primarily responsible for creating D&D’s rules, explained. “A major focus of the revised Dungeon Master’s Guide is training.”
The new Dungeon Master’s Guide aims to make things accessible and inviting for new DMs while making life easier for veterans. One section deals deal with the real-world issues that tend to be the biggest barriers to play — like scheduling issues, which are more dangerous for a D&D party than any litch or dragon. The new DM’s Guide will offer advice on actually getting a group together and running the game, and it will put a premium on the DM’s prep time in general. These are changes that will likely prove handy for any time-strapped dads who want to get into D&D, either with their kids or with their friends. All of the player classes, like wizards, barbarians, and druids, are getting changes, the details of which are currently being worked out in a regular series of playtests and user feedback surveys.
Some of these changes are significant, though everyone involved stresses that the updates are not Sixth Edition and that the new releases will be backward compatible with the past decade of Fifth Edition books — and they will, albeit with maybe a little finagling and consulting of glossaries on the DM’s part.
Additionally, the new books will have new, lavish art in them — art that depicts much broader and more diverse examples of adventurers, part of the game’s ongoing (if occasionally rocky) efforts to be more welcoming to all sorts of players.
The nearly 50-year-old game is also making extensive efforts to educate kids, both about how to play the game and in the scholastic sense. Wizards of the Coast is offering free resources to help kids (and/or any eager involved parents) to set up D&D clubs at school, and a series of D&D-themed teaching activities is getting rave reviews from educators. The game, teachers say, is an excellent (and fun!) tool for teaching literacy, one that inspires writers and helps teach social and emotional skills, which are especially important after lockdowns.
“Materials for teachers also work for parents, if they’re curious,” said Shelly Mazzanoble, the game’s senior brand manager. “More resources are coming out for parents, [especially] if they don’t know how to play.”
There’s a lot more in D&D’s pipeline in addition to those resources and the updated rulebooks. This year will see several major releases for the game, all of which Wizards of the Coast previewed in Seattle. Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants is a rules expansion focused on one iconic type of D&D monster, giants, while Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse brings a beloved campaign setting to Fifth Edition. (Dads who love Discworld or kids who love Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might take a shine to this one.) Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk is a classic dungeon-crawling romp that’s a natural sequel to one of the starter adventure sets that served as many players’ entry to the game, and the Deck of Many Things is basically D&D’s take on Tarot Cards — only they’re much more powerful and chaotic. (These two releases basically show the breadth of D&D’s content, the former is ideal for new players, while the latter is geared towards established DMs.)
Wizards of the Coast also previewed an early, early build of one of the most ambitious endeavors in the game’s history — a virtual tabletop. The ability to play D&D online has existed for a while, on sites like Roll20, but D&D’s own virtual tabletop is an elaborate setup that aims to emulate the feeling of playing on an actual tabletop, down to a deliberately toy-like aesthetic that recalls the actual miniatures many groups play with. It’s still a little wonky at this early development stage, but it has immense potential, even if it can’t quite replace the tactile feel of a real, physical table. Getting it fully up and running might take a while. (Maybe something to flag if you need to continue a family D&D game into the college years.)
That’s in the farther future than some of D&D’s other plans, though. But it and the myriad of other planned releases and updates the game designers have in store are all working towards making sure Dungeons & Dragons continues to endure. And, If this update to D&D’s Fifth Edition endures for another decade, my own kid will be old enough that a d20 will no longer be a choking hazard. Maybe we’ll get Grandpa to roll up a character. It’s certainly a much more inviting game than it was in his day.
The new edition of Dungeons & Dragons will release in 2024.

If this sounds familiar, the answer may be to create a garage mudroom with a designated place for all your stuff.
In this article, I’ve gathered several practical, creative ideas to help you get your entryway organized.
But first, let’s talk about how important it is to get your family involved in designing your new garage mudroom.
Imagine this: you walk into your garage after a long day. Instead of tripping over muddy boots and rain-soaked jackets thrown everywhere, you find a neat and organized space where everything has its place.
For most people, this sounds like a dream.
To make this a reality, you must get your family involved when designing your garage mudroom or drop zone.
Here’s why.
The primary reason to involve your family when creating a garage mudroom is simple: it’s their space too.
Everybody has unique needs and habits that should be taken into account.
Your spouse may need a spot for gardening tools, or your teenager needs a dedicated place for their sports gear.
Additionally, involving your family in the project helps them feel a sense of ownership and responsibility. They’re more likely to take care of the space and maintain its organization when they’ve been part of the planning and setup process.
Brainstorming: Gather your family for a brainstorming session. Discuss what each person wants out of the mudroom. Do they need a specific place for their things? How much space does each person require?
This is also a good time to discuss the rules for the mudroom, like always hanging up coats or cleaning off shoes before placing them on the rack.
Designing: Encourage everyone, especially kids, to draw out what they envision for the space. This will give you insight into their thinking and may provide creative ideas you hadn’t thought of.
Building and Setting Up: If it’s safe, involve everyone in the building or setting up process. Most family members can safely handle simple tasks like painting walls, assembling storage units, or arranging hooks. Remember, it’s not just about getting the job done. It’s also about creating shared memories and a sense of accomplishment.
Decorating: Finally, let each person contribute a personal touch to the space. This could be anything from choosing a paint color, picking a coat hook, or adding a piece of decor.
Creating a garage mudroom or drop zone is not just about organization. It’s about making your garage a more useful space for everyone in your family.
By involving everyone in the process, you’re sure to create a space that meets everyone’s needs and, more importantly, an area everyone respects and maintains.
After all, your garage is more than just storage space. It’s a part of your home.
To help you get started, I’ve created a list of my top 10 garage mudroom ideas.
These ideas are meant to inspire and guide you, no matter the size of your garage or your budget.
From simple, cost-effective solutions to more elaborate designs, there’s something here for everyone. Remember, the best mudroom for your garage is the one that caters to your family’s needs and fits seamlessly with your lifestyle.
So, get ready to take notes, because here are 10 ideas that will turn your garage into a practical, stylish, and organized mudroom.
Let’s dive in!
Are you looking for a way to store a lot of miscellaneous overflow items? Consider a store-it-all cabinet for your garage mudroom. The right cabinet can turn a cluttered space into an organized, efficient area you’ll be proud to show off.
When choosing a cabinet, it’s not about size alone. You also want it to have the functionality you need.
Cabinets with drawers provide a concealed space to store small items like gloves or hats. You won’t need to rummage through piles of stuff. Everything will be easily accessible and well protected.
Heavy-duty cabinet shelves can take care of larger items like boots and shoes. Instead of piling them in a corner, organize them on a shelf where they will be easy to find and less likely to become damaged or worn prematurely.
Does your garage serve as a drop-off point for jackets or leashes? Cabinets with integrated hooks can provide an easy-to-reach spot that keeps these items off the floor or countertops.
What about those odd-shaped or loose items that seem to be constantly searching for a home? Baskets or open bins in the cabinet provide storage that adapts to fit your changing needs.
Ever rushed out the door only to realize you’ve left your keys or pet’s leash somewhere in the house?
A simple solution is to add hooks in your garage mudroom specifically for these items. This minimizes the chances of misplacing these items or leaving them behind in another room.
They’re always in the same spot, readily available as you head out the door or return home.
Where to place these hooks? Consider areas that are easily accessible and visible. Right next to the door leading into the house is a convenient spot.
We have a set of hooks next to our garage entry door, so our keys and dog leashes are the last things we see when leaving and the first thing we see when getting home.
Another idea could be next to where you hang your coat or store your shoes. This keeps all your outdoor essentials in one area and creates a routine that makes it easier to remember your items.
You can also create a designated key and leash area if you have more space.
This could be a small shelf or cabinet with hooks underneath for storing other outdoor essentials, like sunglasses or hats.
We’ve all performed that awkward hop on one foot while trying to pull off our boots. Adding a bench or seating area to your garage mudroom can solve that problem.
If you’re a DIY’er, building your own bench allows for complete customization. You can make the size, design, and materials match the rest of your garage mudroom’s design.
If that’s not your style, there’s no shortage of pre-built benches.
When buying one, look for a bench proportional to the space. A big bench may look great, but you don’t want it to infringe on everything else in your garage.
Consider repurposing an underused piece of furniture. An old coffee table or a sturdy shelf can be given a new lease of life in your mudroom, saving you money and being environmentally friendly.
Place your garage bench close to your door but not in the way.
You want people to be able to sit down right as they enter or leave but also have enough space to move around the bench without any hassle.
Walking into the house with your hands full of mail and no clear place to put it? Consider creating a drop zone in your garage mudroom.
It’s a dedicated spot that’s perfect for sorting and storing mail and keys as soon as you walk in. That way, you’re not wasting time searching for lost keys or that important piece of mail.
A wall-mounted organizer is a great space-saver, with pockets for mail and hooks for keys.
Or, if you prefer a minimalist design, a simple tray on a bench or shelf can serve the purpose well.
Baskets offer a rustic touch and ample storage, while a dedicated shelf can double as decor and drop zone.
Tired of tripping over shoes and boots scattered across your garage mudroom floor? Garage shoe racks can put an end to this problem by keeping your footwear organized, visible, and off the floor.
Shelves offer more than just organization. They also help protect your footwear from dirt, damage, and wear. Keeping shoes or boots off the ground reduces the chance of them being stepped on or squished together. Plus, shelving allows for ventilation, which is essential for those damp boots or sweaty running shoes.
Shelves with slats offer excellent ventilation, while dividers keep each pair separate and easily accessible. Trays can catch dirt or water from your shoes, keeping your space clean.
Tiered racks are a fantastic space-saving solution for those with a sizeable shoe collection.
Adding mats for wet shoes in your garage mudroom can make coming home a little less messy. Mats provide a dedicated place for those soggy shoes, saving your floors from water and dirt.
More than a barrier against mess, mats serve a crucial safety role. Wet shoes can easily slide on hard floors, but a mat absorbs moisture and provides grip, helping prevent slips and falls.
When choosing a mat for your wet shoes, there are a few key factors to consider. Durability is a must, so look for materials like rubber or vinyl that can withstand the moisture and wear and tear of heavy boots or shoes.
Easy-to-clean should also be on your checklist. Garage mats that can be easily vacuumed, shaken out, or hosed down make maintenance a breeze.
Have you ever considered adding a utility sink to your garage? This might sound extravagant, but it’s a game-changer for creating a practical garage mudroom.
Think about it: a sink in the mudroom means no more walking into the house with dirty hands or shoes.
Rinsing muddy shoes or tools, washing hands, filling water bottles, or even soaking clothes before washing can be done right there.
Consider the following things when choosing the right sink.
First, think about how much space you have available and how much you’ll need for other things. A large basin might be ideal for soaking clothes or cleaning big tools, but a compact sink can still do the job if space is tight.
Second, consider how you’ll install it. You’ll probably need a plumber to ensure the water and drain lines are correctly set up.
Finally, style is important. You want a sink that matches the aesthetic of your mudroom, whether that’s sleek stainless steel or vintage farmhouse.
Have you thought about giving each family member their own personal storage in your garage mudroom? Installing lockers or cubbies might be the perfect solution.
Lockers and cubbies offer individualized storage spaces, keeping everyone’s belongings separate and easy to find. No more hunting for lost gloves or mismatched boots!
Many lockers include doors or locks that provide an extra layer of security and privacy. That’s a plus if you’re storing valuable items like helmets or sports equipment.
To add a personal touch, consider customizing your lockers or cubbies. A fresh coat of paint in each person’s favorite color or labels with names can make the space feel more personal and fun.
Plus, it’s an excellent way to encourage everyone to take responsibility for their items and keep their spaces tidy.
The floor area in your garage mudroom has to work incredibly hard. It’s the first line of defense against moisture, dirt, and the general wear and tear that comes with being a high-traffic area.
Even if you don’t upgrade the flooring in the rest of your garage, you’ll want something that’s durable and easy to clean in your mudroom.
Some materials, like rubber or PVC, help make cleaning up a breeze.
Instead of scrubbing stubborn dirt or stains, you can sweep or mop it up.
Vinyl and tile are stylish and resilient, offering plenty of different colors and styles. Concrete, while not the most glamorous, is exceptionally durable and can be painted or stained to elevate its look. Rubber is another practical choice, known for its shock-absorption and non-slip qualities.
I’m lucky with my dog. She’s a little bit of a princess, so she doesn’t come in from outside muddy or wet.
If your dog does, consider incorporating a dog wash station into your garage mudroom to help keep the rest of your house free from muddy paw prints.
A dog wash station usually consists of a tub that’s at a comfortable height to save you from bending over.
You’ll want a faucet and hose for easy rinsing and a drain to remove the water. Add a towel rack for quick drying and storage for pet shampoos, brushes, and other grooming essentials.
Creating a garage mudroom can go a long way to help keep the rest of your house organized.
By providing a dedicated area for those muddy boots, rain-soaked jackets, and other items, your garage can become more than just a parking spot or storage area.
It truly becomes part of your home.
Whether you opt for a simple setup with a few hooks and a shoe rack or go all out with built-in lockers, benches, and custom storage, remember the goal is to create a functional space that suits your family’s needs and lifestyle.
And remember, involving your family in the process isn’t just about building a more practical mudroom. It’s also about fostering a sense of shared responsibility and care for the space.
By working together, you’ll end up with a mudroom that helps keep your home cleaner and more organized and brings your family closer together.
Your dream garage mudroom is just a few steps away.
Go ahead and make it happen!

]]>Organizing clutter and evaluating our storage strategy is a constant—we are always adapting to our ever-changing lifestyles and schedules, like the demands of a new school year or the crazy tumult of the holidays. Winter is just another time for us to take stock of how our household reacts to the season of bulky winter coats, wet and dirty boots, and errant mittens taking over the whole house.
Luckily, we are always up to the challenge of finding the best way to store and keep our winter clothing, lest we get overrun! Here are some great ideas I’ve found. I hope they inspire you to tackle your winter storage dilemma.
There’s always another way to maximize your mudroom! You can fit your winter shoes into the space beneath the built-in bench. It’s a no-brainer and a breeze to make.
Yet another reason why you need to stock up on a clear plastic shoe organizer. These little pockets are everything! Hung up inside a cabinet door or in your mudroom, you and your family can easily stash away scarves, hats, and gloves while still keeping them visible.
How cute is this? But it’s also pretty useful—clip up your mittens and scarves and hang the whole rack near the door, so everything you need is a grab away as you head out the door on cold mornings.
Try mounting old drawers on casters to store all your sweaters and winter coats. This way, they’re rolled away and out of sight beneath your bed, but ready to be thrown on once the air starts getting crisp and chilly.
If there’s one thing I hate, it’s melted snow and mud getting tracked all over my clean kitchen floor! Avoid the hassle with this pretty and functional DIY drip tray.
It’s so easy to make you’ll probably end up making one for each member of the family (now there’s an idea—why not personalize it?)
If you have kids who constantly leave mittens and hats everywhere, consider giving them a “dump zone” by way of this wire magazine rack mounted inside the hall closet. They’ll never lose anything—how’s that for amazingly useful winter storage?
Good-quality leather boots are an investment. Make sure you keep yours in tip-top shape ready to take on the harsh weather outside by storing them properly. Cut a pool noodle to size and use them to maintain your boots’ structure.
Sometimes the best winter storage hacks are the simplest: Have you ever considered knotting your scarves and tights this way on a large hanger? Pull it out from the back of your closet when winter comes and you have your entire collection within arm’s reach.
If you're into the rustic look and recycling is your thing, why not assemble old crates into a functional shoe storage system that's full of vintage vibe?
Bonus: Old beverage crates with compartments work for scarves, too!
Large empty cans get a new life as mudroom storage center! When mounted on the wall, they become great little cubbies perfect for storing anything like crocheted headwear and other snow gear.
Aren't all of these winter storage ideas so easily DIY-able? I hope these ideas help you keep your cool despite the stress and mess of the cold weather season! There's no reason to dread the dreary weather because you have all the clutter under control.
Which winter storage idea do you need in your home right now? Let me know in the comment section below.

Simple, stylish and versatile, these colourless kicks pair with anything from tailoring to tracksuits, making them an absolute must-have for the modern man. But not all white sneakers were created equal.
Of the thousands of designs out there, only a handful shine through as the true heroes, the classics, the best white sneakers ever made. These are the styles worth investing in because they are the ones that will stand the test of time.
Below, you’ll find our pick of the best white sneakers, along with the key buying considerations and answers to some of the most common white-sneaker questions.
Your choice of material is one of the big decisions when when shopping for a pair of white sneakers. What a shoe is made from affects how it feels, performs and looks, so consider how you plan to wear the shoe and where you intend to use it.
Affordable, low-maintenance and breathable, canvas is a great option when it comes to summer footwear. Sure, it gets dirty, but its rugged construction means you can quite happily throw it in the washing machine. It should come out as good as new.
There are few pieces of footwear more versatile than a simple white leather sneaker. The material is durable and easy to care for, and its classic look is unlikely to date.
Synthetic materials have been popular in sneaker design for decades due to their durability, lightness, breathability and athletic performance benefits. You’ll often find technical man-made fabrics in athletic shoes, but synthetic materials such as vegan leathers are also worth looking into.
Shop for shoes made using synthetic materials if you need high-performance white sneakers for things like running or hitting the gym.
There are many, many styles of white sneakers, and there is often some overlap between them. That said, for us, white sneakers can be broken down into the following categories. Here’s what they are and why you might want to consider them.
Clean, simple and endlessly versatile, minimalist white leather sneakers are one of our favourite types of footwear. Understated leather styles like the Adidas Stan Smith, the Reebok Club C and the Nike Cortez will always look great in white and don’t need to shout to be heard.
The emergence of the Common Projects Achilles Low in 2004 paved the way for a new dawn of white sneaker madness. The classic tennis shoe silhouette was reimagined in fine Italian materials, resulting in a shoe with sporting DNA that could legitimately be worn with tailoring. If you’re looking for upscale shoes that can be dressed up or down with ease, this is what you need.
Plimsoll is simply the name given in Britain to basic shoes with a canvas upper and a rubber sole. These sneakers are usually very affordable, timelessly stylish and excellent for the summer months. Look to brands like Novesta, Superga and Converse for inspiration.
Sneakers may be fashion items now, but in the beginning it was all about sport. Today, athletic sneakers are those styles geared towards some sort of athletic performance, whether it be running, basketball, tennis or something else. They usually feature a lightweight construction and technical fabrics.
Many of the world’s most prestigious designer brands offer their own white sneakers. Labels like Gucci, Maison Margiela and Alexander McQueen all offer their own unique twist on classic white sneaker styles and these designs have become iconic in their own right.
A classic, refined low-top sneaker handmade in Portugal using heritage shoemaking principles. Expect premium leather uppers and lining, a removable cushioned footbed and, interestingly, a cemented construction that ensures the original shape is kept.
Paris-based brand J.C.Lutz offers luxury, made-to-order sneakers direct to the consumer. Its unique business model enables you to customise everything from the colour of the sole to the accents to the laces, meaning you can design your ideal white sneaker. Not only that, you can also add your name/initials to the upper or sole, making them truly one of a kind.
Each shoe is then 100% handcrafted to spec in the Le Marche region of Italy by master shoemakers using only the finest materials, including Margom rubber soles and buttery-soft calf leather, making these kicks of the highest quality.
For that premium minimalist sneaker style without the jaw-dropping price tag, the Oliver Cabell Low 1 is the ideal option. The direct-to-consumer brand use the same materials and factories as high-end competitors with the lack of bricks and mortar allowing them to pass the saving on to the customer. For a minimal, sleek dress up or down white sneaker, the Low 1 is a timeless classic.
Taking inspiration from high-end dress shoes, the Upton Wholecut sneaker from Crown Northampton is crafted using a single piece of leather – something very few shoemakers have the capability to do.
As minimal as it gets, this sleek and sophisticated kick features a soft padded collar, full leather lining (including the insole) and premium waxed laces.
Handmade in England using the finest calf grain leather, the craftsmanship would rival even the best pair of Oxfords.
If you’re a fan of Vans skate shoes but feel they’re overdone, Cariuma’s Slip On sneaker could be for you.
Made by skaters for skaters, it’s environmentally-friendly and 100% vegan thanks to the organic cotton upper and natural rubber outsole. Not only that, a cork insert and bio memory foam insole ensures all-day comfort, whether you’re mooching around the city or hitting the half-pipe.
The idea behind JAK is simple: to make simple, beautiful sneakers that go with anything and everything.
The bestsellig Atom model is a case in point: it’s about as uncluttered and restrained as a shoe can be due to it’s one-piece, tongueless upper, and it’s handmade in Portugal using the highest quality calf leather.
Clae specialises in simple, stripped-back sneakers with a focus on environmentally-friendly production. It’s footwear that’s designed for versatility and immunity to the passing of trends – classic silhouettes, understated colour schemes and no excessive logos or detail.
The LA brand’s bestselling silhouette is the Bradley: a sleek, minimal silhouette available in a wealth of quality materials, including this 100% Vegan option made using recycled and traceable materials.
A certified iconic sneaker that although predominantly white, offers a subtle flash of colour in its detailing. The Stan Smith is a fail-safe option that is chunkier than other plimsoll-inspired silhouettes but can still be dressed up with tailoring or down with jeans and chinos. Make sure they’re kept spotless.
The Converse Chuck Taylor sits alongside the Adidas Stan Smith and Superga Cotu Classic as a durable and affordable white sneaker for everyday use. A design almost untouched for over 80 years, this is a sneaker you can rest assured will never go out of style.
A low-profile silhouette that’s dripping with skate legacy, the Vans Old Skool Low Top is great value for money and designed to withstand a battering. Light and breathable, the sneaker’s robust shape makes it a surprisingly versatile option that you will be able to count on for many years to come.
Loved by the fashion crowd, detested by style purists but with a popularity (and aesthetic) that makes them unavoidable, the ugly sneaker trend is not for the faint-hearted – but chances are if you’re making the investment, you know what you’re doing. Alexander McQueen’s Wedge Sole sneaker has quickly become the industry insider’s choice, making its statement via shape and proportion rather than reverting to garish design.
This retro tennis shoe has remained unchanged since its launch in 1985. We’re glad. It’s a simple shoe with just the right amount of detail and its unassuming looks mean it pairs well with almost anything. It’s also one of those rare shoes that seems to get better the more beaten up it eventually becomes.
For affordability and style, it’s difficult to beat the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic. Streamline, unassuming and comfortable, the canvas upper adds breathability for warmer climates. The self-described “people’s shoes of Italy” are an understated classic that offer a timeless silhouette, working well with both wide and slim-leg trousers.
The Veja mission statement is “one foot in design and the other in social responsibility”, which means quality footwear whilst using sustainable materials (including organic cotton), respecting fair trade principles and championing upcycling. Their Nova White is a stylish vegan shoe that proves style can be sustainable.
The Gucci Ace has been a permanent feature of the Italian label’s footwear line-up for several years. It takes inspiration from vintage shoes from the 1970s and is instantly recognisable thanks to the web stripes to the sides. Embroidery is also a key feature, with gold thread detail present on most models.
Understated, minimal and sought after – the cult New York sneaker company’s Original Achilles Low is a contemporary menswear icon. Made in Italy with a superior construction and trademark golden hot-stamped serial number, Common Projects have mastered the minimal white sneaker, creating a style that’s perfect for both smart and casual looks. Often imitated, never bettered.
Bored of making the best sneakers for everyone else, having spent 15 years designing for household names (some on this list), British footwear designers Uniform Standard decided to go it alone in 2018 – bringing their handmade minimalist leather sneaker expertise to the masses.
Now, with a stable of sleek minimal designs in a variety of colourways and materials the brand are a serious contender for your white sneaker needs. The Series 1 White Leather Vintage with its slightly off-white sole is a subtly refined take on a classic.
Great design and products made to the highest quality specification. This is the promise of Swedish brand C.QP, and its philosophy is embodied in its original Racquet Sneaker – hand made from finest tumbled Italian white leather in a classic low top. Its deconstructed build ensures an extremely soft and breathable finish, with a properly constructed and supportive sole.
Still have a question? We’ve covered a few of the most common queries relating to white sneakers below.
In short, anything you want. The beauty of white sneakers is their versatility. You can team them up with almost anything and know it’ll work. Some favourites of ours include mid-wash denim, grey flannel trousers or crisp navy chinos. As long as you don’t wear them with a tux to a black-tie event then you should be good.
The best method for cleaning your white sneakers will depend largely on what they’re made of. Leather and suede should be treated to protect it from the elements, while canvas and synthetic styles can be thrown in the wash. There are also handy whitening pens that you can buy to help disguise stains, scuffs and wear marks.
There aren’t many sneaker brands out there that don’t make a white sneaker in some shape or form. A few of the most prolific are Converse, Nike, Adidas, Common Projects, Veja, Vans and Reebok.
It’s up to you, but we’d say yes. Wearing socks is always a good idea, but you can opt for discreet no-show socks if you want to give those ankles some air in the warmer months.

]]>Espadrilles have been around for centuries and originated in the Pyrenees Mountains of Spain and France. These shoes were initially worn by peasants and farmers as a comfortable, affordable option for working in the fields.
They were made of simple materials like canvas or cotton and featured a distinctive woven jute sole. Over time, espadrilles became more fashionable, and designers began incorporating new materials and styles.
In the 20th century, espadrilles became popular with artists and intellectuals, who embraced their bohemian appeal. Today, espadrilles are a staple of summer fashion, and you can find them in a variety of colors, patterns, and materials.
One of the best things about espadrilles is the variety of styles available. You can find espadrille flats, sandals, wedges, and even sneakers.
The classic espadrille features a canvas or cotton upper and a woven jute sole, but you can also find espadrilles with leather, suede, or denim uppers.
The variety of styles makes it possible for you to find espadrilles with a wedge if you are someone who likes to add some height as you might with heels, or flats if you prefer optimal comfort.
The range of styles also means that the range of options are extended to what you can wear with them in terms of clothing.
Espadrille flats are perfect for casual occasions and can be worn with shorts, jeans, or sundresses, while espadrille sandals are a great option for a beach day or poolside lounging.
My personal favorite as a petite person are espadrille wedges, which are perfect for dressing up an outfit and can be worn with maxi dresses or skirts.
Now that you know about the different styles of espadrilles, let’s talk about how to wear them. One of the great things about espadrilles is their versatility. You can dress them up or down and wear them for any occasion.
For a casual look, pair espadrille flats with shorts or cropped jeans. Add a basic t-shirt or tank top for a simple but stylish outfit.
If you want to dress up a bit, try espadrille wedges with a maxi dress or skirt. This look is perfect for a summer wedding or garden party.
Espadrille sandals are a great option for a day at the beach or pool. Pair them with a swimsuit and cover-up for a comfortable, beachy look.
You can also wear espadrilles with a sundress or romper for a cute and effortless outfit.
If you’re looking to add espadrilles to your shoe collection, there are plenty of options to choose from. Top designers like Chanel and Saint Laurent offer high-end espadrilles with luxurious materials and designs.
If you’re on a budget, you can still find affordable espadrilles at all kinds of stores, ranging from department stores like Nordstrom (and Nordstrom Rack) to J.Crew and H&M.
When shopping for espadrilles, you’ll want to consider the material, style, and fit. Look for shoes with high-quality materials that will last through the summer.
Choose a style that fits your needs, whether that’s a flat, sandal, or wedge. And make sure to try on a few sizes to find the perfect fit.
Here are some of my favorite styles I’ve rounded up for you to take a look at:
Espadrilles have remained a timeless fashion staple for centuries, evolving from practical shoes for farmers to fashionable footwear for everyone. With their versatility in style and materials, whether you’re looking for a casual or dressy look, espadrilles are the perfect addition to your summer shoe collection.
