These 2020 Boot Trends Are Made For Walking, Strutting & So Much More

Bring! On! The! Boots! Excuse me if I seem over-excited about 2020 boot trends, but there’s truly no season like boot season. Don’t get me wrong, I love a cutesy spring clog or a strappy summer heel as much as the next girl, but boots? Made for walking, and I’m ready to strut this season.

If there’s one thing appropriate for pretty much any season (but especially fall and winter), it’s boots and booties. For those of us who believe you can never own too many of the chic shoe, the 2020 boot trends are a welcome addition to our boot arsenals. You’re going to want to make some major room in your closet—or on shoe rack, or under your bed—because the boot trends this year came to walk all over previous seasons. Expect to see your favorite styles updated for fall and winter 2020, as well as some totally-new new looks in the mix. Your fall ensembles are in for a major upgrade.

Boots and booties trends are arguably some of the most fun to play around with because they don’t differ too much from year to year. I mean, buy a good black Chelsea boot and you’re pretty much set for years to come. However, the 2020 boot trends actually give us all a chance to try out something new, in addition to the option to rewear some of last year’s old faves. Whether it be a bright pop of color, some metallic glam or letting your socks do the talking, there’s a lot to love on this list, so get your wallet ready.

Below, you’ll find seven boot trends you can expect to reign this year—plus ways to shop them all. These boots and booties trends were made for both walking and looking stylish, so feel free to stock up on a few pairs. Wheether you choose to go bold or stay neutral, you’ll look chic AF either way.

1. Over-The-Knee Glam

Over-the-knee boots are nothing new, but in fall 2020, expect this trend to lean toward the glamorous. From colorful metallics to lace-up over-the-knee boots, you’re going to have legs for days. Consider this your excuse to buy a few pairs of statement-makers.

Steve Madden.

Buy: Steve Madden Gorgeena Boots $39.98

If a classic black OTK boot is what you seek, look no further than the Steve Madden Gorgeena Boots. Bonus points for the on-trend pointy toe and comfortable chunky heel.

Unisa.

Unisa Stefni Over The Knee Boots $79.99

If you’re all about animal print, the Unisa Stefni Over The Knee Boots will be a welcome pop of pattern to your wardrobe. Even though the snakeskin look is bold, the black and white colorway keeps it toned down just enough.

2. Nice & Neutral

Neutrals are a trend for 2020 in all things—boots included. The best part about it? Blacks, whites, browns and all the neutral colors go with pretty much anything. 2020 is the perfect time to splurge on that pair of neutral boots you’ve been eyeing, as you’re sure to get plenty of use out of them in the coming months.

Sam Edelman.

Buy: Sam Edelman Hai Tall Boots $165

I’m sorry, but are the Sam Edelman Hai Tall Boots not the most classy neutral boots of all time? I die! I love the creamy capucchino colorway and the soft suede finish.

Sam Edelman.

Buy: Tenlee Ankle Boots $136

On the total opposite end of the “Neutral Sam Edelman Boot” spectrum sit the Tenlee Ankle Boots, which are a much more casual, chunky shoe. Throw these babies on with everything from sweaters and leggings to boho autumn dresses.

3. Cut-Out Boots

Bare all to the world, my friends, including your socks (or feet, if you’re down with that). In 2020, cut-out boots are sure to be the unexpected trend you see everywhere. Grab your coolest socks or dare to go sock-less with these cut-out boots. The choice is yours.

3.1 Phillip Lim.

Buy: Alexa 40mm Cutout Boots $595

If you want a splurge item for the fall, try these cut-out boots from 3.1 Phillip Lim. Sure, they’re on the pricier side, but they’ll definitely be a stable in your wardrobe for seasons.

Soludos.

Buy: Soludos Lola Perforated Booties $67.05

These Soludos Lola Perforated Booties are a sweeter take on the look, and the olive green suede is a fun take on a neutral colorway.

4. Platform Boots

We’re calling it now: 2020 is the year of the platform shoe. Expect to see platform boots from all your favorite designers in the new year. As someone who’s definitely on the short side, this easier-to-walk-in-than-heels alternative is the ideal fashion situation.

Dirty Laundry.

Dirty Laundry Campus Queen Booties $69.95

buy it

Platform combat boots in a neutral colorway? How very Yeezy (on a budget) of you! The Dirty Laundry Campus Queen Platform Booties are a fun boot that’s femme with just the right amount of edge.

Jessica Simpson.

Jessica Simpson Irella Platform Combat… $169

buy it

If you’re looking for the ultimate concert shoe, the Jessica Simpson Irella Platform Combat Boot is a godsend. It’s exactly the kind of boot that’s comfortable to walk around in for hours, but it gives you enough lift to see over the row in front of you, and you won’t have to worry about anyone stepping on your toes should you choose to enter a mosh pit. Just saying!

5. The Cowboy Boot Reinvented

The western and cowboy boot have made a big splash in the 2019 circuits, and the trend is getting a bit of an upgrade for 2020. You can expect similar western vibes with a little more flare. I’m talking metallics, sparkles, embroidery—You name it.

Villa Rouge.

Buy: Bronson Cowboy Boots $92.50

If you’re looking for something a little more neutral—but still super chic—try these Villa Rouge boots. They’re not your average cowboy boots, but still pair well with just about anything.

Laurence Dacade.

Buy: Laurence Dacade Vanessa Boots $213

Something tells me that Dolly Parton definitely has a pair of the Laurence Dacade Vanessa Boots in her closet. If she doesn’t someone better let her know they exist so she can buy some ASAP.

6. A New Kind of Riding Boot

The riding boot has been around for years and years (and years), but in 2020, it’s getting reinvented. A little less prep and little more street style, this upgraded riding boot is sure to be everywhere in the new year. No horse required.

Anne Klein.

Anne Klein Henrie Boot $79.98

buy it

If you normally opt for brown riding boots, consider a black option for a cool, chic change. The Anne Klein Henrie Boot is a classic silhouette you can wear with absolutely everything.

FP Collection.

Grayson Tall Boots $298

buy it

These are not your riding instructor’s boots, that’s for sure! The Grayson Tall Boots give off riding-boot vibes, but with a much more boho, laid-black flair.

7. Color Pop

The brighter, the better in 2020. While neutral boots will definitely be seen everywhere in the new year, so will brightly colored boots and booties. This eye-popping trend is a fun one to play around with in any season, and can add some color to dreary winter days as well.

Sam Edelman.

Buy: Oakland Western Boots $169.25

These bright yellow boots are sure to amp up any outfit—no matter the season. Pair them with a classic white button down and jeans for a fun statement shoe look.

Sam Edelman.

Buy: Sam Edelman Raelle Ankle Boots $72

Oh wow, I have a major crush on the cool-toned blue hue of the faux-croc Sam Edelman Raelle Ankle Boots. This is a pop of color that’s statement-making, but not garish. We love a happy medium!
